I've heard it referred to as "Flipping" or "Inverting", it tends to happen to true still waters, as in not in-line (stream fed)
When there has been no wind or rain for a long period combined with constant hot temperatures, as when we was on the receiving end of it , it was a Monday morning in June after weeks of the above 3 years ago - then some cloud cover suddenly moved over the area, shortly afterwards 12 waters all got all their stocks wiped in just a matter of a few hours
There was probably more, I was told of 12.
Hence we now have Pumps to "Churn" the water column over and not allow it separate into layers
~ You will know if a waters done this - the water turns jet black in under an hour - and stinks, and I mean stink!

I haven't had to run the aerator in anger once this year Mark. I believe that the windmill has had a really positive impact.
