Dunstable quarry is secure , but the carp have not reached any great size , and there seems to be a lot more people fishing for the cats .
The originals were lovely fish , but are long gone .

There's still a handful of 30s in there, but over the years the cats have got way bigger. The water is an old chalk pit with very little in the way of natural foods. Therefore the stock relies on anglers bait. If you stock eating machines in the numbers Dunstable have, it stands to reason there's gonna be a lot less food for the carp and growth rates are bound to suffer. Factor in the restrictions on the amount of bait people can use due to the water quality issues and you begin to see why carp weights stagnate in there. Years ago I suggested installation of man made islands along the road bank and planting weed beds in an attempt to encourage more vegetation, more natural food, and give the carp more areas of cover. As was usual at that time. It was ignored like most suggestions that weren't made by a couple of the committee who view it as their own personal water. So much nonsense went on. Each year they would harvest the stock ponds. Move a load of fingerlings into the main lake. They'd promptly get eaten by the cats and then the committee would complain about poor carp catch rates. When I suggested that the carp should be grown on to bigger sizes in above ground pools before stocking. I was ignored. And so on and so on. I'm gave up in the end and left them to it.

I don't mind the fish not being massive it's more getting out catching that I care about. In the way of carp catch rates then do not a lot of fish come out?

It wasn't difficult when I used to fish it. The biggest drawback was it tended to be a bit peggy. There's a big hard spot out in the middle that can be fished from either side. There's a spot off of pegs 19-21 that produced well. Areas that allowed a chuck to the reeds such as the bay produced in warmer months. There's no features apart from junk on the bottom so the fish move about. You fish to depths rather than features in most swims.
If pretty sure if I went on there now with the advancements in rigs, access to better baits etc then it wouldn't take long to have a few. For instance we used to try to zig fish it, but the swims were tight with high backs behind. I used to try to coil up bloody great hooklinks behind for zig fishing. Now with adjustable zig kits I think you could smash them up. Spodding over zigs for instance wasn't something I ever tried in there.
There's feck all for them to eat so they've always loved bait. If you can get a spot going you can keep them returning. Back then I shop bought my bait and used basic particles from titmuss. Now I'd prebait a spot using cheap gear from monster particles and bait a spot until they just can't ignore it.
It's not a hard water. The biggest ball ache was the push round as towards the snags the path was very narrow and the far side was a set of steps to go down. But from what I've been told now when the houses went up they used machines to do a load of work down there and it's a flat push round now.
For convenience I'd say go for it. Just don't get involved in anything to do with running it.

Is this lake the one behind the chalk hills as you come from Mk on the A5 into Dunstable. Would do a left at traffic lights and then its a bit down the road on the left???

Dunstable angling club is quite possibly one of the worst run venues you could ever fish , its full of carp that look washed out and stunted and run by the biggest pair of weapons you're ever likely to meet . the rules are made up as you go along and if they don't like you its made hard for you . stupid rule that allows you to fish a Saturday night but have to be off the water by noon for some reason ....... don't waste your time or money on the place much better tickets just up the road in Leighton buzzard
Add the fact that they want it to be a cat water and pump it full of pellet even though there is a bait limit and its full to brim of bream all around 4lb it makes it a nightmare to target the carp ..... think theres around 6 x 30s in there now . Not as safe as people make out either . that said if it was run properly it would be a half decent place on the doorstep ... but while the muppets that are in control now run it will never be more than just a hole in the ground
