Always relied on a bulb release in the past for self takes but my latest Nikon has a built in Intervalometer.
Any suggestions/experience on settings and timings?
Thanks

Brilliant bits of kit Andy - complete game changer in doing self takes. Set the interval (i have mine on 4 secs) and take as many phots as you want, just press play and off it goes.

Just make sure you buy the one that is compatible with your camera and do a few dress rehearsals to get the optimum distance from fish to lens. Mark up your landing net pole with a dot of nail varnish to get the correct distance each time.

Thanks, James.
Initially I was considering the in built function on the D600 but on reflection a wireless remote device would offer better control and greater convenience.

I've got a cannon mate, mini jack plug for the inverlometer. Takes 2 small AAA batteries that last forever.

I've got a d5200 and In order to get a preview of the picture once taken I think it has to be set around the 6/7 second mark. Can't really remember

I set mine for a 20 second delay so have time to pick fish up and check framing on flip screen, then set it to take 5 pics at 5 second intervals, then I can see pic its just taken and back to live view before it takes next pic.

Agree with you, also have a D5200 and use the intervalometer all the time ( boat caught fish).
Mine is set at 10 secs and it provides a view on the flip screen after each shot. Very valuable for me to ensure I have all the fish in shot🙁.

If you mean a hand held remote button then no they aren't better and don t offer more convenience than an intervalometer. Right pain in the ass to use. Intervalometer s are brilliant and dead easy to use. I set mine with a 30 second initial delay, then takes 5 pics with 5 seconds between them.more than enough imo

20 seconds delay, 10 seconds interval. I set mine to 999 pictures so it just keeps going till I stop it.

Appreciate the feedback fellas👍
Clearly, I need to ensure I purchase a compatible model. I like the idea of a wireless model but there is something reassuring about a cable.
Any significant performance differences? Wireless are a jump in price too.

If your Nikon has a built in intervalometer as you say then you don't need to buy anything.

Yes, it does have a built in intervalometer.
However, the options to either set a pre-determined start time or begin immediately is not ideal. Unfortunately, its not possible to delay shooting prior to lifting the fish so the first shutter release and subsequent shots fire off within a couple of seconds of hitting the ‘ok' button.

The nikon intervalometer sounds pretty poor from a few posts on here lately

So you have to set a start time rather than a delay?
Does live view work with it?

Rob Burgess has released a video on the Korda Instagram page explaining some tips for this very method of self takes.

Correct, not possible to set a delay. I've not yet checked in Live view.
I'm erring on the side of buying a separate unit for convenience sake.
