we do plenty of of fishing at this sort of range with boats but 140 with the stick is a ball ache for a week.

Is any body spombing at these sort of ranges and what braid or mono are you guys using??

Well out of my range I'm afraid! I've found midi Spomb goes furthest with the finest braid you dare and 50lb braid leader. I find powerpro best. That said mono mainline might be safer if you can get the distance.

30lb whiplash that is kept wet (found boiling a kettle and pouring it over spool 20 minutes before is a good trick), trebuchet 13ft spod rod, xtc spod reel, big spomb, 70lb braided shockleader. Always wind the braid back through your fingers, don't let it go softly onto the spool as things will start going bang.
When the wind gets up, I switch to the alien Spods, in fact it's often use them more than a spomb, best long range baiting tool for me just a bit of a pain to get your hands on these days.

That's the ones. I've got the original versions, they fly like a bullet and retrieve easier than any other baiting tool. Very good bits of kits

Yes they are excellent, I think it was Terry Edmonds that first made the UK aware of them

I think MCF produced one at one time.

Using a free spirit 13ft LR Spomb rod, shimano xtd spod reel, 20lb whiplash and 50lb leader I was putting a large spomb 140 yards and the medium spomb 160 yards and I'm sure with a bit of practice I could put them further.
As others have mentioned take a look at the Alien spods for maximum range, think Terry Edmonds has cast them over 200 yards.

Technique and confidence in your setup will play a big part when baiting at those ranges.

Ordered the alien spods from Johnson ross just now, already got the midi and large Spomb.



I think it could be an edge spombing over a well placed boated hookbait just keeps it topped up when out of reach of the stick which most of it is.

Usual practice is to get giddy with the stick on day one then have an aching arm for a few days, couldn't grip the rod once over but we do take 70kg with us,

Ive found the korda spod braid much better for distance than whiplash. You do have to be a little bit careful about how you hit the clip with it but at 150+ it shouldn't be too much of an issue

I use this, a 50lb armakord leader with a big spomb. I can hit 150 with the medium size spomb but have found that anything over that they arent quite heavy enough. It does depend on the rod a bit as my 13ft aviator spod takes a fair amount to compress it

Agreed, it's an 8 carrier braid and they cast/behave much better than the 4 carrier ones. I think you'll find the Korda one is actually the same as the Daiwa J x8 braid

I couldnt cast 150 never mind spomb 150 😞

Spombs fly alot further than cast out rigs for sure, agree with the lower down posts 160 is doable with the right gear.
