It seems that the coronavirus outbreak is gathering momentum and with airlines, cruise ships and other big gatherings of people being run down or in some cases put into quarantine I would be interested to know what precautions anglers and more importantly venue owners are considering for the coming season. Considering that anglers will be coming to France from all over the UK, travelling in packed ferries and mixing with people from all over when using the service area's on motorways there is a very real risk of the infection spreading. In many cases anglers will be eating together at the venue's and in some instances travelling together in coaches we have all got to be taking the threat of coronavirus very seriously. From the perspective of a fishery owner there is a real risk that is someone is diagnosed with the illness when at the venue then the authorities could close the venue down until the outbreak is over. I am aware that this subject is not as interesting as a discussion on fishing however it is something we all could be affected by in the coming months. I would be especially interested to hear from fellow fishery owners regarding precautions that we can take to reduce the risk for both ourselves and our anglers.

Dont think venues are in great danger as it is not that hard to desinfect areas that anglers use... more problems you can expect on ferries etc... many flights are also already cancelled all over europe... anyone traveling in next few months have to take into consideration that they might be on hold somewhere for longer time so will not always come home as expected... and what is most important even if it doesnt look like serious problem it can be for older and sick people, death rate is 15% in people over 80 years so take consideration to that and keep in mind that you can maybe go thrue this like an ordinary flue but somebody close to you that is already sick, old etc can have very big problems when infected...

At the end of the day Jim it's your choice to take angler's whilst this virus is on the rise as the lake owner. If you've family/friends that are at risk from a flu virus, you've a difficult decision to make it seems. Good luck.

Its not whether we take anglers or not but more a realistic appraisal of where we are at the moment. All we can do is try and reduce the risk to out customers which in turn will reduce the risk to our family.

What are you doing to reduce the risk at your fishery?

You have a duty of care to protect visitors to your venue.... it would be interesting to know what you and other fishery owners are doing.

It seems the only effective methods to limit the chances of spreading the virus are minimum contact and cleanliness. Think that's all you can try to achieve Jim.

The next question for fisheries abroad is what will you do if there are movement restrictions imposed by the government whether its UK, French etc and paid up customers are unable to get to the venue.

Will bookings be refunded partially or fully, rescheduled ?

It's accepted that this situation is unexpected and neither the customers fault or the venues fault.

Personally I have a booking fully paid up for next month at a well known venue and I've asked them this question. When/if I get a response I'll ensure that the response whether good or bad is known.

It is worth all anglers travelling to France to invest in a comprehensive travel insurance covering them for healthcare and cancellations, etc. I recently traveled to Australia and did exactly that at relatively small cost.

So, your saying take travel insurance and try and claim it back as you'll be keeping any monies paid for fishing at your venue?

Quick google produced this little gem -

That said, Money would not be surprised if insurers – faced with a deluge of claims in the future – started to argue that the virus was a known problem when the policy was bought. Force majeure may be used to avoid paying out.

So far Eurotunnel have a webpage saying they will follow government guidelines ...As and when they change.
At least they are acknowledging the virus.
P&O however .......... Nothing , no advice or possible future actions to would be travellers ,and considering the hoardes of school trips they take onboard each day who are using coaches from right across Europe , I feel they are perhaps sticking their heads up their funnels and hoping it will maybe go away.
Forewarned would be forearmed , I am now just over two weeks away from a booked trip , and have no idea if the ferries will be affected , I know I wont get a refund on the lake as with most bookings non refundable if less than 8 weeks to go.

Fingers crossed

Well I messaged angling lines and asked what would happen if travel restrictions were put in place so I couldn't make my booking in May and they didn't directly answer the question just asked if I'd taken out travel insurance lol so I don't think they will be refunding anyone. To be fair I think it's fair enough as the lakes could stand to lose a whole seasons worth of revenue through no fault of their own. Gutting as none of my group had taken out any insurance at the time of booking so any insurance now are very unlikely to cover it. But I'd say its our own fault rather than the lake owners or agents.

Looks like everyone's losing out then in a worse case scenario except maybe the lake owners lol but as I say I don't blame them as its their livelihood.

That's a selective piece of the article.
It also says that they have spoken to the Association of British Insurers who say their members will pay out if the cover is taken out before the British Government issues non travel advice for the particular country in question.
Are you sure?

This action cannot be undone.
