Looking to buy a cobb, if for instance i wanted to go tescos and buy a chuck in the oven lasagne. Im assuming you can cook that on a cobb. If so, how do you know how long to cook it for, and how hot the cobb should be with closing vents etc?

Yes it can be done although may take longer or some experimenting

I got a thermometer to stick in one of the vent holes in the top of the dome, would help with estimations. Most of my cobb cooking has been trial, error, guesstimating and if worried, cook it a little longer.

The most important thing when using a Cobb as an oven is to keep the lid on to keep the heat in. It won't burn as searing hot as a BBQ but it will keep a nice steady heat if you use the right fuel. As Andy said, get a bbq thermometer with a probe long enough to go through the vent and leave the lid on until it hits the right temp. A thermometer takes all the guess work out of it.

cook it for the time it states on the box that exactly what I do when using my Cobb to cook ready meals I've cooked on it . I've got the Cobb extension ring and Cobb roasting rack so I ain't putting the foil tray or what ever the food is sat in directly on the hot plate

Yes the roasting rack is a must if cooking meals in trays etc. I find that it can sometimes take twice as long to cook something properly compared to what it says as there's so many variables, ambient temperature, wind, how many coals you have used etc etc, As mentioned it's a case of trial and error, one of those Bluetooth thermometers can be handy for certain things. This type are good as there's no wires involved, I have both types but haven't used either in a while

The roasting rack makes it more of an oven than a hot plate, I got the roasting rack from new and don't think I've ever cooked directly on the grill plate. As below get a thermometer so you can see what it's doing. I use the Aussie heat beads in mine and you get about 20/25 degrees per bead but they take a while to get up to temp.

Aside from voiding the warranty, if i bought one if these and drilled the top cover and fitted it, that would work for the temperature inside and assist with cooking times etc?

I have an identical looking one as that with same fitment etc. And just put it through one of the existing air vents in the top. Only used it a few times when trying new things like long low cooks but it seems to work good enough and i only really use as a guide.

no need to drill holes With the Cobb Thermometer DROPS IN YOUR LID VENT HOLES
then when its up to cooking temp (ambient temp )

using an oven glove as it gets blooming hot lift dome off remove the thermometer and shove it in your meat

you are guaranteed perfectly cooked chicken, beef, pork and lamb every time to your particular taste. The 5" probe is perfect for checking the meat's temperature but i

So that doesnt need to be in the meat etc to give an accurate temperature? Just popped theough the lid and left will give you the temperature in the dome?

The one Gerry linked is for pushing into the meat, the one you sent earlier can be pushed through the existing air vent in the top of the dome just. This gives an idea of booking Temps in the dome like an oven would tell you

Edit - I think Gerry is saying it is long enough to go through the dome hole and then into the meat

Just so you know, the one I linked to earlier gives you the meat and the oven temp at the same time

I had a look earlier, and the cents on the premier air dont seem wide enough for that one i posted earlier to sit in properly. The cobb one will obviously fot but doesnt seem to be suitable for my needs.

Looks like either a bluetooth one or i drill the lid and fit a bbq one permanently

So i figured id order a bbq thermometer from amazon. The one linked fits in the adjustable vent lovely. Seems pretty accurate. Had a tescos spinach and ricotta chicken and it came out lovely. Says 30 minutes, but i cut the breast open after 30 minutes, and they looked cooked, but figured id put them back in for another 5 minutes just to be sure. So far so good

After a while you'll start getting used to how certain things cook and timings etc and it will all become fairly easy. And as you say, try something for how long you think and take a look, can always give it a bit longer if you want.

A full roast on the cobb is certainly a joy and satisfying to eat

I would have gone for one that had a point so you can also stick in your joint ,chicken etc so yo can tell if something is cooked properly like the Cobb Thermometer

I use a ThermoPro digital thermometer with 2 probes. One goes in the thickest part of the meat, the other in the air around the meat to take the ambient temperature. Both through the lid vents. About £23 on Amazon.
