Hi guys,
I am finishing the last boilie mix I wanted to make, a poultry meal mix, with liver and silk worm meal.
The thing I can't make up my mind about is the label.
I would love to hear your choice and why, please:
1:
Fenugreek 2%
Sweet paprika 4%
Garlic. 1%
2:
Fenugreek 2%
Vegetable stock powder 2%
Ground up lovage 3% (this is also called the Maggi plant, and was positive in the feed stimulation test of Loeb)
3:
Fenugreek 2%
Danish blue cheese powder 5%
Thanks!

Difficult to say. I have never seen/smelt silk worm meal but I understand it's strong and easy to detect in a mix. Of the three options you give I would go for 3 first followed by 1 as a back up. Just because you would need a powerful label with the sw meal

Hi,
To me swm doesn't smell strong. It smells earthy. I really can't detect it in my mix.
But I will test out the cheese powder too.
Thanks!

Why do you need a “label”?
And why would it have to be one of the options below?
They seem pretty set in stone, curious as to why!
Also, in my opinion, forget how silkworm smells to humans, that has naff all to do with how the carp experience it. Whether it smells overpowering to us or not, it does not mean you need a higher amount of spices etc.
Great ingredient though, I've played with it quite a bit and found it to be effective

I would keep it to:
Fenugreek 3%
Garlic 2%
Liquid liver hydro 20ml/kg mix

Hi Kenny,
Can I ask why you're not a fan of paprika?
I already use liver hydro in the bait, so that's settled!

The combo of garlic and fenugreek is powerful enough. I see no need to add other spices.
Also, this combo did well for me and i have a 5% rule on spices in the mix 😅

Haha, okay, thanks Kenny! Good explanation.

Thought I'd throw my views into the pot, I would happily use any spice on it's own but I do think they work best in combinations. After a lot of trial and error I have come to my favourite combination of the spices I have used (and there are many I haven't used) and this is 5% paprika 2.5% garlic and 2.5% fenugreek. That is 10% of the total bait is spices.

Thanks for that input, mate! I appreciate it. Thing is, the spice combination you mention (I use slightly different dosages), I also use in my fishmeal bait. I want a bit different for my meat meal bait. But on the other hand: if it works, it works, right?

Garlic and fenugreek is an awesome combination. Imo garlic can be overdone though. I wouldn't go any higher than 3% with it, and fenugreek at 2%

Yes, I have a lot of confidence in those. So you think fenugreek can be overdone too? I have used it up to 5 percent without issues.

Not so much fenugreek no, but I find adding a higher ratio than the garlic to be counter productive, and works best at a slightly lower level to the garlic. I've never used it without garlic though tbh

I don't go higher than 1 % garlic. I find it too overpowering otherwise. Thanks for the clarification!

In that case I would go for your second combination, I've never heard of lovage or seen any other reference to it so you might be onto something new..

Yes, you could be right. Will test some out!
Thanks gentlemen!

The problem with comparing spice levels is we all use different suppliers, one mans 1% might need to be 2% for the same effect from a different supplier. The advice below is just a starting point and you need to tweak the levels to suit your suppliers products
