Currently using some fox rod but really struggles when at range with an medium spomb.
Looking for something that doesn't cost loads but would do the job.

So about 100-120 yards roughly?
I'd have thought any mid priced spod rod should be able to do that fairly easily. I use a nash pursuit spod/marker that was about £100. I can hit 100yards with that and I'm not a big caster.
Other mates of mine use free spirit spod rods and they also hit that sort of range without any trouble.
I'd have thought the size of the spool and the line you are using would have just as much effect.

What fox rod are you using? The original fox xt could cast a very very long way in the right hands.........
Which leads to me my next point. Its unlikely that you can overload a spod rod with a medium spomb. It might be a technique issue

I use a free spirit spomb rod I can hit that pretty easily mate with that rod and I'm not a big caster either
I use the Free Spirit CTX Spomb rod for up to 100 yards and it's a comfortable cast.
For long range I still use the old Fox XT spod rod, it's a heavy old rod but can cast a spomb or spod a very long way.

Hi, what line are you using on your spod reel? That will make a difference.. spod rods are tough as you have to compress them to get the most out of them. I have a trebuchet and I'm topping out at 150 but was 140 on my previous session.. someone gave me some pointers, best one being to lay the spomb on the floor and set you cast up with arms basically straight and point rod tip down towards the ground slightly and walk back as you do to take up the slack.. this produces more arc and starts to compress rod quicker.. this gave me an extra 10 yards instantly..its hard to explain and feels really awkward.. I witnessed a guy casting a spomb over 200 yards with ease repeatedly that was insane

Apparently he also uses a fox XT spod.. but I hear he breaks a couple every now and again which is why he doesnt use a seriously high end rod.

Last two years have been using Fox X5 Horizon 13 Spod/marker. I can bait consistently and accurately at 30 wraps and further with less accuracy. I use a Daiwa Emblem spod reel loaded with floating spod braid and a 50lb armacord leader. If you are using a modern 12/13 ft spod/spom rod and have a similar reel braid combo you can reach 100/120 yards. If not it isn't the kit, look at a casting lesson or two. Sorry but properly set up current kit will do these ranges.

I had a 13' XT for a bit, bloody hell what a beast that rod is, sold it in the end, didn't have the shoulders for it

The fox rod I have was cheap but is like a broomstick, very hard to compress. I've never really had to hit over 100 yards consistently on any other water I've fished.
On a friends expensive free spirit rod I can cast 33 wraps. My fishing rods that are Harrison's I can cast with a bait up to 35.
I'm using the same reels that are on my fishing rod which are shimano ultegras and I have banana braid on my spod reel.
So yeah I need a rod that will compress easily enough. I know 100-120 yards isn't loads but you have to account for winds etc as it's a pretty big lake that I fish. I just can't afford to buy something top end at the moment.

13ft free spirit ctx spomb/spod rod will easily hit your required distances...excellent rod for the price

I Think unless you want extreme range and lots of it, buying an expensive spod rod is a complete waste of money. I bet most guys never get their spod rod to full compression in the majority of their fishing. Just buy a reasonable mid priced rod and you'll be fine.

I have a freespirit 12ft lrs for sale. Can hit 25 wraps with midi Spod without much trouble. Fireline braid and leader.

Might not be to everyones taste but the shimano tx spod rod at around £55 it will chuck to around 120 (for me) max. Great for the price

Yea my treb is 13ft... I can only do a few spombs at range and my arms and shoulders are fooked! Makes the rods feel easy afterwards though!

Don't get hung up on spod/spomb size mate. Most rods and angler's using the rod have an optimum casting weight for maximum distance. When I used to do a lot of distance work I'd use rubber dog balls in weights from 3.5oz upto 6oz on a field. See which worked the best with my technique. You'd be surprised. My advice would be to weigh your spomb and try it at different weights with the rod you've got first.

My trusty balisters 13' 3.5 can hit 115 yards (60 yards = 15 wraps) so near to 30 with a large Spomb and Boilies

what I think is my old custom Leatherbarrows Harrison Ballista spod rod is on ebay. That thigs a beast and will cast a well over 120yrds using a large spomb. Easy to use too.
Wish I didn't sell it now.
