What reels are they? I'd be going down the spare spool route and buying line in 300m lots, cost permitting. I just buy bulk and bung it all on.

Thats pretty much what I said! Basically a spare spool is your friend - even if simply for respooling . . .

I don't trust line counters either - just wish more brands would simply put guide markers on bulk spools every 50M

The line counters can skip - I've had a couple and found them unreliable

A bit of faff, but the best way that I've found is to find out the Rate of Retrieve (RoR) of your reel, once you know that, divide the 250m (or however much you want on) by the RoR, to give you the number of turns - dead easy...

Then, get a spool (1) and put on the 250m (or however much you want on) using the RoR - when its on get some backing line, (I normally go for 0.40mm) and then fill the spool to where you want it, keeping count of the number of turns it takes to fill the spool with the filling line.

Put another spool (2) on and reverse ALL the line from spool (1) onto (2) this should leave you with a correctly filled spool.

Keep this info on your phone or a note pad

Then it's just a case of putting the number of turns of backing on first then filling with the number of turns to give you 250m (or however much you want on) of line.

(TIP) Check the line as your winding it on at least 2-3 times (I normally do it at every 100 turns - also gives your arm a rest if you are doing a few) so that when you stop, the line hangs limply and doesnt coil.

(TIP) When loading line, put it in a bucket of warm water with a smal blob of fairly liquid in it and wind it on through a sponge to keep the tension and also to clean the line.

(TIP) If you're using tapered mainline, then keep a spool with the backing already on, so that if you crack off you can simply reverse it.

(TIP) At the end of the year (or however many times a year you change your line) you can reverse it onto the spare and then do all the other spools you have and it saves you having to buy new line - unless your casting 250m - and it leaves you with the spare spool with the backing on.

Looking at what I've written, It all sounds quite complex - but once you get your head around it, it's dead easy...

AND MOST OF ALL - TAKE YOUR TIME DOING IT

SilureMark's post.

Just get a line counter. Can't believe some of the suggestions on here... the mind boggles. You can measure EXACTLY how much line you are putting on a spool. Makes it a doddle to get the right amount of backing and mainline on the spool and obviously saves you time AND money, as next to no line is wasted. I could load your 4 spools up with the exact amount in less than 5 minutes. Also handy for settling arguments on how far you can cast

Nice method but that would take an age! Massive risk of tangles as well IMO albiet arguably less twist - just bite the bullet and get a spare spool; makes life a lot easier especially if you want to respool 2-3 times per season

Thanks for the replies something to ponder over this weekend. Might go with the distance sticks but at 25m for ease.

Measure it out over distance sticks 250m each -walk round the sticks with spool. Cut off, load on reel, back this up to top of spool. Reverse it off on the sticks then reload so good line is on top.
Yes its faff but accurate if you do not have the spare spool option.

My Mrs is a diamond. 10m measured in the garden. 25 x onto a big old boat multiplayer. Use 250 of the old line on a spool then put backing over that to get your backing amount and do that 4 times. Bob’s your Auntie’s live in lover

you'll be needing a spare empty spool that matches your current ones. . .the only accurate way is to divide 250m by the retrieve rate on your specific reel; ie a single turn of the handle retrieves Xmm.

25000mm divided by Xmm = number of full handle revolutions to acheive 250M.

Once you've worked this out retrieve X number of revolutions from the 12lb XT bulk spool onto the spare reel spool followed by the backer to the point where the spool is filled properly. Then simply fill a new empty spool direct from the spare (backer goes on first / mainline 2nd until spool is filled) and repeat the process for additional reels . . .job done.

Alternatively if your worried about excess twist you could use the same diameter backer and from the spools max capacity of that diameter line work out the backer requirement first (based on retrieve rate / total number of handle revolutions ) ie Total capacity minus 250m worth of handle revolutions = backer amount. Then spool your mainline over the top . . .only prob with this is you run the guantlet when the spool gets filled as its pretty difficulty to ascertain the difference betweeen a full and slightly 'overfull' spool which could mean you fall short on the 3rd / 4th reel . . .

If you use the line economizers and check the reel box it'll show that the japanese measurement ' gou ' 4 which is app. 0.33 dia same as syncro XT 12lb and that will take around 250m

Youll also see on the box the measurement goes up/down 50m per ' gou' so if you want/ know the dia of the backing you could maybe it out from that ??

Japanese line conversion

I thought ESP lines were marked at 250m ???

I am wanting to fill and back 4 reels from a 1000m spool, I currently have 3 spools backed so I can fill all of them from one 1000m spool. Is there an easy way to do this? Or can someone who does the similar with 5000Ts give me a diameter for the backing. Probably an easy method but it’s got me flummoxed
Line is ESP Syncro XT in 12ib
