That’s how it should work but depends on the seller being properly set up to export outside the EU and into the UK. Otherwise you can pay VAT twice (VAT at point of sale plus import VAT) plus any tariff rate on the item.

Just because his catch photo album is more impressive than yours that doesn't justify you hampering his progress with inferior reels.

5500 is the perfect size for me but everyone is obsessed with 3.75tc rods and huge egg whisk reels for some reason so they probably think they wouldnt sell.

Had a play about with one in Bobco today.
Cheap looking handle...rotor wobble.
Does it feel special...not really,
Does it feel like it's worth £620...no chance.

They'll be £500 apeice after xmas...and they still won't be worth that.

If only we could go back to the time when items were made to a spec not a price.

620 a reel. Talked to a few tackle shops about price and been told they would only make roughly 30 quid per a reel. And shimno has advised that 620 is what they should be selling at for a set of three.

They'll end up a similar price the the older ones over time, just a case of waiting long enough before they become a bit more sensible...before the next new one comes out a year later 😅

I had the first black mags, the 12000 xtb’s. I think shimano have went down hill ever since the original tech 1000 xt.

Lots of people didn’t like them, they’re plastic looking compared to the XTB

Bugger!

Sorry mate. That information I posted was from a Facebook group, a guy who was showing of his ‘stealth XTBs’
I only managed to find one bit to swap out on my reels, the ‘heel’ at the rear bottom
The other bits I couldn’t find on eBay (but then everything was in short supply during COVID last year)

1-17992-Bail Spring Cover
1-17994-Bail Spring Guard

Are not the correct Part Numbers to fit the Technium, I've just bought them and they are too small, these parts are from the 5500 Model not the 14000.

Indeed, £120 for a kit that does 3.
I have 7 that I was going to do...although I already purchased a couple of the individual bits I found on eBay.

I might flog 3 as they are boxed like new, and they're currently going for circa £1400 (for 3) on the Shimano pages on Facebook.
That'll be useful money to go towards these new models. I like the look of them

Yes, agree, just cosmetics.

Some parts are interchangeable between different reels/models.
e.g. quite a few people like to take parts from the XTC Tech Mag (Black) and put on the XTB Tech Mag (also black, but some parts were shiny silver which can be replaced with black versions)

Don't really know much about the Shimano big pit reels. What's the difference between the XTD and the XSD apart from cosmetics. Are there any other differences? If the only difference is the cosmetics, would I be right inassuming that this would apply to all aero techniums?

Agreed 👍

I think that the use of black and silver is to denote their top tier equipment, like the XTR pasts for instance. I'd have much preferred for Shimano to to the same as the last version but just added the new technologies they've come up with, would have looked so much better in my eyes, but hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder right?

SS3000’s with modern but robust internals, if that’s possible! They’d sell them at £500 plus no problem. Agree on the 12000’s also. Will never happen sadly

All they'd need to do to cause a riot at all tackle shops is to announce they were re releasing the original tech 12000.

Same with Daiwa...if they'd re release the SS3000 without the kerchunk.

Game over....

Good luck with that 👍

Picked up another Tech XTC last week from a well known shop; guy told me bout the new Tech's that they're more than likely won't be in the shops before Christmas due to the cobblers going on with imports. How true that one is is anyone's guess.

Anyway, the new ones look well s4it with all the Jimmy Savile jingle jangle going on...best looking ones so far are the XTC's in my book.

Need the blingy ones though to match me blingy alps and blingy metalware, bring em on I say.

The no spare spool though is not good at all

Given sales of the 14000 aero technium were below the prior 12000 model and that most seemed to go for second hand 12000’s, I’m not surprised they have brought out this model, taking the chrome design features directly from the 12000. Adding the 45mm spool and increasing the body size has reduced the appeal to me; whilst I’m sure it will now cast a bit further than the 35mm spools, in the right hands, it now looks like the oversized Daiwa’s, albeit with Shimano’s superior engineering. I quite liked the old 14000 model but I never really saw any real gains to justify the £200 price differential over the Power Aero; same applies here really, prefer the slightly more compact size of the power aero and only 5gms weight difference, which makes no difference

Don't understand spending nearly 2k on a set of reels🤷‍♂️
How much bait or decent ticket would that buy you
Anyway a lot of people don't even cast nowadays 🤣🎣🎣

Its not very common but when they did fail this way they could cause a lot of damage as far as i am aware it is something that most people that service reels check, i was shown and told about it from gary at custom reels.

Is that the xta that is the same body as the original xt? i believe some xt's have failed this way after the screw has come loose.
My original 4 xt's are over 20 years old and have been my main reels in this time have been opened a couple of times for services etc on every occasion the screw has still been tight with no sign of undoing, i dont think its as common a fault as being made out.

For my occasional long distance reels I have an old set of Shimano Ultegra 10,000 XSC reels. The lightness compared to my Shimano Big Baitrunner Long Cast is huge and helps with rod speed.
But anything up to 120 still use the Long Casts or 8010 Aero GT Baitrunners as I prefer a baitrunner reel.

Oh i do agree to an extent. My basias knocked spots off my tournies. And were far more pleasurable to use.

I would just like to see more put into reducing weight of spodding and marker set ups, cause that i where i think we would most benefit from weight savings

I don't have the Penn's anymore. I use the gold spool emblems ATM. But I do actually have an ss2600 aswell which I've put on my rods, and it makes little difference. Nor when I go the other way and put my old longcast baitrunners from my catfish setup on. I can understand why people want light reels if they are out long trotting on the river, or wandering round with lures, but when the only time we as carp anglers have the rod in our hands is either casting out or playing fish and the vast majority is on the rests it makes sod all difference if a reel weighs a few grams more than another

For me, a lighter reel just feels nicer to use. My rods with the reels just feel far lighter and more nimble, sorta wand like. Better.

Try it for yourself, if you've got something the size of say a ss2600, put that on your rod and then go back to your Penns. Yup, the example is extreme, though it makes the point.

All of this to a degree is subjective. If having a lightweight reel makes any difference to you and you want X brand expensive, go for it, if you don't want it, just don't and maybe put money into things you believe are more important.

Hardly a status thing. Some people just like nice things. If people can afford them, then good for them. Not sure people look around a lake and consider others without them to be of lower status though.

Reels like these and Basia's are not necessarily worth it or needed. But are a nice to have if you want to have a status symbol set up.

for carp fishing any reel will do the job as good as the next really. if you as lure fishing for GT's in the sea then you need a good reel to cope with the drag pressure and long runs, lets face it carp don't really take 100 yard runs.

I spoke with a top long range angler about reels and when he was with shimano he said the difference in the distance he could cast with a aerlex and a technium was about 5 yards at 200 plus yards so is the £400 difference worth it.

there are so many good reels now at around the £100 to £150 price tag.

yes the basia is light but 95% of the time reels are on a alarm

I've just watched the ad for the xsd sea fishing version where the fisherman lands a fish of a few pounds. Hardly promoting them for skulldragging catfish out of lily pads are they. Most reels for carp fishing are overpriced and engineered to be lightweight rather than tough and longlife.
Stick a slosh 20 on a big ballista you could probably land anything on that combo.

I've just tried to find out about the new fox ones on.the internet . Todber Manor have them on pre order for £180. For that money I'd give them a go if I were in the market For new reels. Fwiw I'm normally a shimano man, however I do own Daiwa reels. I'd buy the latest Shimano msgs if I had the money, unfortunately I have to live in the real world like most of us.

I would have said it makes a difference over time, I mean the heavier the reel, the more it's going to knacker you out either spodding or just casting around finding or hitting spots.

Does the weight make that much difference though? Spodding set ups are far heavier than fishing rods and reels, and used repetitively. Surely that’s where you want and need the weight savings

You say that about expensive reels but I think I got my ISO's around 2006 / 2008 and at the time they were £285 brand new. They have given me roughly 15 years of good use and they have only been serviced once in that time (for free, by a former member on here - Retro)

I would consider that good value.

It depends really in what you're doing Bradders. Like I was banging on (boringly so) it was the weight saving for me which did make a difference. I had the XTB Ultegrea's [great reel] just that I was fishing at some distance and felt so much lighter and nicer to use after I got the reels I've got now. All in all, even though what I've got now is ridiculously expensive to what I had, the very marginal betterness (sp) was worth it.

I'll happily keep the Techs I've got until they fall apart.

Like the poster you replied to, the Power Aero's are all you really need unless you fancy plunging a load of cash for very tiny gains. You could buy similar in any brand and they'll be ample. One reel that I love and would never part with is my set of Cardinal 55's. For me, with all of its limitations and lack of bells and whistles is the one. That clutch sound is from the gods, nothing truly like it.

Give the fox ones a go. Let's face it we don't keep reels forever so why not just upgrade the cheaper reels every few years. Or buy high end then sell after a few years at probably a bigger loss than buying cheaper ones new periodically
I'm tempted to get the new fox ones. Currently using emblem 35scw , and now I've put felt washers in there are tremendous EXCEPT the line goes behind the spool more than I like. Also line got trapped under drag knob. So very tempted by the new fox offering. I'm a very part time angler aswell so i don't need a 500 pound reel made of diamonds. And the cheaper reels that are produced will do the job I need perfectly fine. When I say cheaper I'm talking emblem price bracket.

You sure? They've been like hens teeth for ages now. As soon as they'd landed in shops they were gone. There are a few places with stock now.

I can only suppose that people being locked in their homes for ages and not much stock about due to muh Covid had a lot to do with the aforementioned.

Anyhoo, so when are your new Techs turning up. Must have put an order in by now seeing as you like a loada nice new shiny?

What a **** looking reel. Ultegra/XTC hybrid by any chance? I certainly won't be opening my wallet for a set of these, but I might however pick up a set of XTC's if they drop those to £300 a piece

Well they have been discontinued now so surely the shops need to really slash the price. Can't be selling 50 quid less than these new ones

I bet the price isn't budget, and with all imports being in short supply I doubt there will be many discounts available. Maybe if I win the lottery.

Not my cup of tea. Far too garish for me with all the shiny s4it.

What was that cobblers about "nearly changing reality", seriously, sod off with the utter nonsense.

Don't be tempted, guy on here told me all basia including the 20 are dog poo and only shimano know how to make a proper carp reel. Expect he will be on this thread soon to confirm this

Oh and another guy was told not to buy basia of any description by a tackle shop and that shop said buy tournies but from a different shop.
