Martin Clarkes Slip D (the original before sheeped/tweaked) used to allow the D to fall back over the eye etc....that used to be a pain when unhooked the fish and untangle the hookbait etc....

The silicone version of blow back is purely a Tell Tale to see if you had been done by the carp....a ring wouldn't unless was able to freely go over the eye....

It's all about the suck/blow when Mr carp takes the bait...force of blowout increases if bait travels further, thus driving hook in more due to velocity

Did the exact same thing when I started using it in 97, I’ve heard Nash claim he did the same thing using silicon prior to the use of a rig ring.

I think he speaks all about it on his evolution of rigs video which can be found on you tube

Not sure about the bit of silicone tbh. Pretty sure it was nashy who first published the blow back rig with the large ring. Iirc the thinking was the bait gets blown out, the large ring slides up over the eye, allowing the hook to drop into the bottom lip. I've used it that way but as Andy said once you've had a fish mouth at it then it can end up in all sorts of weird positions so definitely prefer it with a small ring

Exactly right Ian and people soon realised that it didn't reset after a failed pickup, so started using smaller rings.

Fair enough, what came first the use of a ring or was it the blowout rig with silicone on the hair either way a good rig, like I said not by design but mistake with the oversized ring I found it a faff and tangled but then I guess you take what you want from it, I found with a smaller ring that doesn't slip over the hook eye is how I like to use it.

That's the way it was originally designed, with the ring large enough to go over the eye

Nothing mind bending about it oversized ring and a long hair on a blowback, not by design but I once bought rings that were to large (not as large as what Mark was using) but big enough they passed back over the eye of the hook, I found it annoying as everytime I wound the rig in or caught a fish the ring had done what I guess Mark is trying to achieve but then the hair wrapped and knotted around the hooklink a proper knit one purl one.
