Not fished for them for some years but I remember that I found that they preferred a localised group of bait rather than a spread, especially when placed with a bait boat. Fruity flavoured boilies worked for me rather than savoury but tigers and peanuts worked best of all.

Most takes would hardly move the bobbin and they rarely gave a proper run. At the time I was trying to avoid them but looking back it was interesting fishing.

I've always found they always respond well to sweet fruity baits but I get the impression they'll take anything when they're in the mood. Also they're a proper summer fish. I've never heard of one coming out in the colder months.

I have a friend in France that fishes for them all the time and he told me they prefer a bait fished just off the bottom often he uses flavoured wood balls especially where there are crayfish around so try baits popped up off the bottom anywhere close to reeds

A good tip is to actually get them to fight in the water. I do this by giving their nose a nudge with the landing net. That tends to upset them into going on a mad run!

Wow! A 50lb grassie. I wouldn't mind one of them.

Hello CaptainPat,
I fish up the road from you in NC.
We have lots of grassers here, in small lakes and big. I try to avoid them, but regularly catch 30-50lb class grass carp on tigers on a hair rig. Also on maize/plastic corn.

Yes, the fight starts in the net! I try to unhook them in the water and not bring them inboard.

Sure bread will work too, good luck....

As said, a controller float will help get your bait out if surface fishing. Vary your hooklength for most effective takes. I've found the crust rather than flake floats better and is obviously a bit more robust for longer casting.

Get yourself a strong net handle too. First grassie I caught came in easy until it hit the net, then it went bonkers and snapped the bloody handle. And that was only a third othe weight you are hoping for!

If you want to fish floating bread further than you can cast it you need some kind of controller float. Lots of specialist versions available in the UK for surface fishing but probably not so much in the US. You can make your own though, in the simplest form that would be a piece of stick fixed to the line with rubber bands a foot or two from the hook.

I don't fish for Grass Carp so can't give any tips on targeting them based on experience, but from what I hear they eat bottom baits aimed at regular carp so your standard approach with corn may well work.

Hello everyone,

I live in southwest florida in the USA, as you guys know carp is the most underappreciated fish around here. I used to live in the northern US where i did a lot of common carp fishing. Since i recently moved to south florida i learned that there are no common carp here, only grass carp. Ive seen youtube videos of people sightfishing big grassies on the east coast of florida since their canals are very clear. On my coast the canals are not clear and quite weedy in certain areas. Theres a large canal system not too far away that connects a lot of small ponds. I have heard stories of people seeing very large grass carp sometimes eating nuts and various other things floating on the surface in there. Also people have thrown bread to ducks and had some grass carp come up and eat that. Ive been told theres 60lb fish in there but am not sure how to target them. For common carp i would just use a simple botrom rig with corn. We had a few grass carp up where i caught commons but never caught a grass carp that way. So since you guys are the carp pros, how do you think i should go about targeting these grassies? It sounds like bread is a decent bet but how would you cast something so light since any weight will just make it sink to the bottom?

Thanks for any help
