Hi Nick. I remember that! I cannot take any credit as the higher levels idea was passed on to me by Keith Sykes, no less, the bait man's Bait Man. Tim Paisley, Dave Moore, Bill Cottam and others also enjoyed great success using Betaine.

I conducted quite a few in-the-wild experiments on it, trying to establish an upper limit...which Is how I came to the conclusion that there wasn't one, especially if applied as I suggested to Nick, as a sprinkle over cooling baits or as a dip for hookbaits.

I used to use 10g in a 4 egg mix of Activ8, and this would still be my bait of choice. It is also phenomenal for barbel.

I remember reading a number of Ken T's articles about Betaine HCl on and in baits, the higher the level the better.
I gave him a Trigga recipe I used with a high level of Betaine, and a couple of other tweaks, and compared to plain basic Trigga frozen boilies, it produced a lot more fish.

That's very interesting. I remember reading an article by that Mark bloke that owned Baitcraft, where he stated in the strongest terms that carp can't detect betaine at all. He did say it was good for them from a digestive point of view, but useless as an attractor.

I think bait companies advised on low levels due to cost more than because higher levels didn't work.

I went as high as 15grammes in Trigga, and as a Ken tip, sprinkled Betaine over the baits as they came out of the boil.

I have experimented with different levels of betaine hcl over the years and have found higher levels to be far more effective than the lower levels recommended by bait company's. To get the best out of it I highly recommend 15g per kg. The difference in my catch rate was night and day especially when used in conjunction with a mix containing a chunk of quality milk proteins. Remember betaine hcl also helps greatly in digestion as well as being attractive to carp. The hydrochloric acid portion of this product helps breakdown proteins and aids trypsin digestion.

Is that 5g of Betaine per kg or lb?
5g per kg is good but might be a bit much for a lb of mix.
I’ve not experimented with it at high levels but have been warned against it because of its very low pH, apparently it can repel.

How much of these two ingredients can be added to a boilie mix?
My liquids are eggs, 50ml squid brand fish sauce, 5ml flavour
im thinking 5g each sea salt and 5g betaine?
Is sea salt even worth adding?
Thanks
