The reel only adds twist if your bail arm roller isn't working properly, so the correct way is as stated in tin heads clip

correct, to counteract the twist your reel is adding by turning the line 90 degrees.

You're right, mono is manufactured in a linear process and is would on to the bulk spool 'straight on' but you have to factor in the twist added by the reel, and loading off the side of the spool helps counteracts this (as long as you do it the right side)

You are saying line should be taken off the bulk spool by laying it on its side, no?

No it isnt, its taking it off in the reverse of how it went on. The link tin head put up shows the correct method

You're putting twist in the line by spooling it horizontally on your reel (via the line roller) Label up vs label down is effectively unwinding the line off the bulk spook clockwise or counter clockwise. Having the bulk spool one way will counteract the twist you're adding at the reel end, and the other way will exacerbate it.

its got nothing to do with labels
Mentioning labels was an easy way to describe the orientation of the spool, unless you've got an old Mitchell reel the label facing you is in most cases the accepted way if you have faith in this method.
Maybe my post didn't make it clear but your post doesn't make it clear to me, do you use a method similar to that in my link and chuffy's pic or do you do the other method. If it was the later then according to you I shouldn't of got the problem but I did..

If this post confuses then maybe leave it there as I'm with IP100 and Chuffy on this as it works for me and whatever you do works for you

I've never understood why people say that, line doesn't go onto the spool from the side, so why take it off that way? It's wound around the central spindle of the spool, therefore it shouldn't come off either label side or the other side, but from straight between the 2 sides, The same way that an extension lead comes out and retracts for example. The spooling tool you can buy on ebay for a few quid is the way to do it properly, or get someone with a pencil through the spool

Some lines are oscillated during loading of the spool so you have to use a different method entirely to load them (spool on the side vs. spool flat). You really need to check during loading to make sure you're using the suitable method.

When your putting on new line the line goes on to the reel spool clockwise so has to come off the manufacturers spool anti clockwise if your laying it flat on the floor. Its got nothing to do with labels, probably why you got twist straight away. Been spooling up like this for years and never had a problem.

It is dead easy to determine if your line is twisting during loading. Put on a say 30 yards, open the bail arm, and pull off a yard or 2. You'll see it coiling/twisting straight away if you're using the wrong method (and there certainly are right/wrong methods for lines from different manufacturers). If it coils/twists, turn the spool of line over and repeat the process.
As long as you're careful and check the line during loading there is no reason that line should ever be twisted after loading.

After many years of using Daiwa Sensor and after reading how good Shimano Technium was I put some on my Infinity BR reels. When putting the new line on I used the method whereby you have the label facing you so in theory the coils come off and onto the reel in the same direction. I suffered line twist almost immediately, I tried the going to a field and reeling in method quite a few times and that only made a slight improvement so I binned it and put on more new Technium but this time used a method that was a bit like this

All ok now

i have used the spin doctor and to be honest although it worked i still don't think you can beat going to a large field /park and stretching out the line. i normally go to a local park wrap it round the goalpost and stretch it out a couple of times then run a warm cloth up and down the line a few times.

amount of comments you get from passers by saying no fish in here mate , used to it now lol

another trick i do is the night before a fishing trip i soak wrist sweatbands in very hot water and place them over my spool, when it comes to fishing the line is perfect and limp and so much better to work with.

As stated I followed the advice but used wrapping sticks cut the lead off and wind back on using a wet sponge wedged in the butt ring and a dripping wet towel took 90% of the twist out

How did you put the line on. With the label facing you with coils coming off towards you or the spool upright so the line comes off straight.

We've all had it. it's not twisted when its spooled up by the supplier, it gets twisted by us.

As said below you need to remove the twist, the walk if out on a field and reel if back in through a towel usually does the trick.

It's not bad line...

Its around a month old and not really been used much. This line has been pretty poor since i first spooled it on. Its really bad on all three rods, and I've tried it with a variety of rigs to try and eliminate something but its still twisting.
I can see a change of line coming pretty soon as I'm not impressed at all

Had massive issues with my Exocet yesterday unbelievable amount of twist and it’s floating. It’s only been on for two session but both were in these ridiculous temperatures so I’m thinking this could be an issue as I’ve never really had any problems before.

Actually got stopped by the Rozzers on the way to a particularly large field less than 1/2 a mile away from my house, so used the wrap sticks same method cut the lead off then wound on through a wet sponge literally removed almost all of the twist so very happy cheers chaps 👍

I reduced my line twist drastically when I switched from playing fish from the clutch to back winding.

I peeled off as much line as I could and as often as I could to reduce the twist.

I'm lucky that I have a big playing field in front of my house.

I literally cut any lead off etc..
Grabbed the end of the line with an open bail arm
Walked, counting 100-120 steps ( I don't fish more than 80 yrds atm)
Walked back.
With a damp sponge, held the line to the rod blank and reeled it in, under tension until it was all back on the reel.

Did this for each rod. Pretty much removed the line twist.

Distance sticks, not really, as the line tension will still be there.
As mentioned, an open field or spin doctor if you can't.

Just use a spin doctor lead......2-3 casts and it will remove the twist.

Well I have nothing to lose as the current condition of the line is no good so will give it a try round the sticks and just be careful when I get to the last few turns

I’m not sure to be fair only thing I can think of is when all that twist is built up before the last couple of wraps it may wrap round your rod and sticks

If you can find the space go to an open field with your rods with a lead on then open the bail arm then walk the rod until the spools nearly empty. Cut the lead off so it’s just line then go back to your rod and wind your line in through a damp cloth with some tension so it goes onto your reel right. I used to have terrible line twist and did this and it totally eliminated it.

Is there anyway to remove line twist?? I spooled my tournies and had forgotten to remove the washer to even the line lay up, so have just loaded the line onto a diff reel and despite it being on there less than a week and unused it’s twisted, I used the sponge in the butt ring method
