Maybe we shouldn't look at this as a mass extinction event, it obviously won't be.

However, it is exactly this type of scenario that is a threat to humanity so epidemics and pandemics are treated seriously if only to act as a test run for our coping strategy. Let's face it, if an asteroid doesn't get us, the next likely cause for a global wipe clean and reset will come from a mutated virus for which there is no cure. That is why Bird Flu, Sars and Corinavirus are being taken so seriously - the next one may be THE one.

Itís not the figures, those deaths are world wide, whatís worrying authorities is you had initially a high mortality rate in a small area, use the same equation of deaths to area world wide and it will greatly outnumber the flu deaths figure,

Mosquitoes kill approx 1000000 people per year.
Crocodiles kill approx 1000 people per year.

So one shouldn't worry about going swimming with wild crocs. ...?

As i said, there are 3000 plus families who maybe don't care that flu kills more people.

Tinhead is right (doesn't happen often granted). Being careful and mindful makes sense.

I watched the news earlier this evening and some woman must have thought she was doing a great job by lunging at various ministers with her microphone screaming questions at them, as if they were going to take her seriously.
Letís face it no one has the answers at the moment.
Some Labour bloke came on and blamed the Conservative performance on austerity. Then they switched back to the studio where they came out with these death rate stats ranging from 0.9% to 5.5%, there were so many variables such as nationality, age, pre-existing medical conditions and how much you trusted the governments involved, then they compared it to other viruses such as flu, meningitis etc and then tried to add in the factors mentioned before, the permutations were endless.
As I say no one knows so donít panic be careful and lead your lives as best as possible

You can bet them figures out of China are complete tosh!!

Probably twice / triple as many cases as there saying. Funny thing is 4 weeks ago I was ill with what I suspect was normal flu although the symptoms were the same as what there stating for CV so perhaps I have already had it without knowing along with many others too.....

Report today said about 90000 cases. About 3000 deaths.

That's about 3.3 per cent. Way more than flu.

Doesn't sound much but tell that to the families of those who don't survive it.

The paper face masks aren't much protection. But having said that neither is a head buried in the sand. ...

the media certainly aint helping things.....

so 1% of people that catch it die?

So - we have 200 employees at my workplace - 2 of them will die right?
