Hi Mal,

OK, we'll leave it at that, I'm happy for you to have most of the last word.
Just to say, I'm really not spoiling for a fight, it's called debate and on major issues, it can sometimes seem contentious, although, I think we both retained our composure admirably.
I know your heart is in the right place, but so is mine.
And that you have compassion and altruism but so do I.
We both, basically want the same outcome, but my view of how to achieve it, is a different path to that which you follow.

BB

Edit
Can someone please tell me why I'm suddenly getting .thread alerts?
Sorry, I can now see the reason. Must have pressed that button by mistake.

You're putting words in my mouth to suit your argument there BB - go back and have a look at what I actually posted which was trying to focus on the positive message in the video.

You seem to be spoiling for a fight - and I've been daft enough to take the bait today.

We're not going to agree on this because our basic philosophy is different. I'd look to people's need for relocation / refuge before a 'what's in it for me' approach. I would hope that a successful country would seek to share that good fortune with others rather than bask in the dubious glory of years of colonisation and exploitation. Some people might want to 'Make America / Britain great again' by reverting to the 'good old days' - but those days were not good for a lot of people who were climbed over in the pursuit of being 'great'. I'd rather share than hoard, rather give someone a leg up than build another layer on a wall...

It might not be what Boris or Trump would do, but that makes me even more certain it's the right thing...

and then you start slipping in phrases like 'our island' and 'letting them all in'...

it's become so much part of the daily discourse in this country that it's not even challenged (by most)

I think we've exhausted our own little spat now - and probably bored a load of people who want to discuss Coronavirus or alien phone masts...

Shall we call it a 'match abandoned' and let it be?

Is that not the problem, the two extremes!

Maybe if we all meet in the middle one day and learned from both perspectives we may actually move forward. Dare I say it, peace and love man

Hi Mal,

You were the one that said racists were complaining about foreigners taking their jobs and and wanting them to go back where they came from. And in that case, I suggested that they may more likely be labour supporters that were the racists you were referring to, because it's more likely that they were the one's who's jobs they were complaining of being taken.
In other words, you were the one that identified that racists were complaining about foreigners and I was trying to identify who they might be.
So, re immigration policy, if a country has a long waiting list of people wanting to enter and become a citizen, doesn't that country have the right to choose who they allow in on grounds of skills requirement or any other condition like language skills etc?
If it was decided that we had more than enough of the workers as shown in the video, are you suggesting that we let them all in anyway, even though there are no job vacancies for them?
Anyway, I would bet that, if we did have a requirement for those workers, the policy would be ammended to accommodate them. The government spoke about this flexibility in the case of seasonal farm workers.
If you were running a business and required extra staff, wouldn't you vet applicants to find ones that were suitable? If you required teachers at your school, wouldn't you employ only those with the appropriate qualifications? And before you start stating moral obligations, we can't accommodate the whole world, our island is crowded enough as it is, and just to remind you that our government is the only one in Europe that fully fulfills it's foreign aid commitment.

BB.

Edit
No way that approach could ever cause any harm is there?

Not if every county in the world was a democratic free society like ours. Norway, say, wouldn't be looking to invade Poland would it?

i'm on the vulnerable lists i have no spleen, retired early at 55 so would be up for doing the picking now the summer is breaking through. The problem is i still have to isolate although I think i've had it. 6 days of total exhaustion in bed with hot sweats and a mild cough but no runny/blocked nose and a very mild sore throat. 2 and a half weeks of exhaustion after getting out of bed. Had 2 good days since and now looking to do something but cant!

Was it Flu or CV who knows?

I thought the government was going to organise a land Army to cover the crop season but I may be wrong

I have a bottle of proper job on the side just out of the fridge, warming up a bit as I type

An inch left is not good, whisky gives me a proper banging head. I have a few single malts in the cupboard, try to just have one double with ice now and again
