Yeah it was a farce some nights around the fair area , we had a few round there ,but also the other way up past the bridge going towards sandy we had some, and that was always quiet up there after about 8pm. Had chub just just under 6lb while barbel fishing. Must admit I'm getting the urge to have a wander up there sometime to see what's about these days

You are probably right it was I think around 2009 Simon opened the shop which closed in 2014.

I was never interested in the barbel their was too much silliness on that stretch.

My best chub came in 2019 long trotting on the pin at 7lb always such a satisfying way of catching the and I never felt under-gunned on light lines with a small 18 wide gape hook lost in their cavernous mouths.

Had a few 6s back in January so I’d say it’s still pretty good for chub. Lots of good areas on the common for them now if you don’t mind a walk.
The roach though seem to have disappeared there are a lot of jack pike on the stretch also with the odd good double.

Sounds about right, although I think your dates might be a little bit out. Had my pb from there in 2010 ,same years as I photo'd the lady for a mate at 17lb 2,so as you know long before it reached what it got to... (I'm sure Simon had opened by then but may be wrong)
Not sure they were on willington very long at all, he had starburst and the common in one weekend, and at that point there were only another 9 carp in there.
I thought that about the l shape too, but was shown by a member only last year ,and yes it's fenced all around it. The issue is they haven't kept the live wire live .
Otters are getting very rife now, they've been on the airman this winter

Yes they keep coming back when we moved there 20 years ago I found a good barbel mauled and left halfway up the bank. It was quiet for a few years after and probably the retirement flats they built and opened in 2008 kept them away, well maybe they were busy at willington when startburst and many other fish were lost in 2009. It was no surprise really as there was a otter holt two miles from that lake.

In 2011 Simon opened walkers pitch in the town and I remember him telling me about a good fish had succumbed so they was were back. Then for a few years it was quiet the council decided to put a tarmac’s path in which was a disappointment as you got many walkers coming back n forth from Sainsburys. They banned night fishing also to be fair folk were travelling from all over the country to fish the Ivel and it was becoming bit of a circus.

A couple of old friends from another club in Herts one of which caught the lady that picture ended up in the national paper though it was only to tell the story it had become another victim….. Since then they built those ghastly retirement homes and mysteriously all the trees fell down on the far bank and even more when they built those little houses - clearly they were sold based on the promise of countryside views…

The l shape has been getting hit quite a lot in the last few years, they can’t completely fence it sadly.

I used to do a lot of walking up there mate, away from the usual spots. And they just aren't there in the numbers. Like you say some are left, but nowhere near as many. It's starting to come back again but I'm sure the furry buggers will be back killing everything soon enough.

There’s still fair few barbel left if you know where to look and don’t mind walking a few miles (and don’t just camp out on back meadows hoping they will just glide by).

It was the constant baiting in a few areas which ultimately lead to their demise.

Back meadows is far too silty for barbel now (partly due to the house building) and lack of work by the EA.

And the chub as well.

Of course being a lot of still folk fish it seriously that’s all I’m going to say on the subject on here.

Far far more than 12 doubles had up at biggleswade river. Plus most of the chub too. It's a shadow of what it was

I suggest you go and fish it and let us know.👍🏼

Take one carp rod and another setup for the silvers.

Their might be a few but there are many clubs / syndicates around biggleswade which have carp in them.

Sadly the otters have been very prevalent in the area. In 2015 a barbel called the lady and at least 12 other doubles fell victim on the Ivel which runs through the town. To this day it’s a shadow of its former self, as such a lot of lakes have fencing

I used to pike fish there in the 90s , stunning place and quite interesting at times as they used to have druid meetings in a temple in the woods adjacent to the lake . No idea of the carp stock I'm afraid .
