Sounds like they were in 'ZTL's - traffic limit zones which have time restrictions and various emissions / engine type regulations. They are a bugger for visitors to navigate. It's a pretty poor show that the car hire company didn't warn you when you picked up the car.

You could try to appeal? Try getting the 6 offences down to 3 or something on the grounds that some of the offences should be considered as one?
But if you say you don't want the aggro then you'll just have to pay up

That's a bitter pill to swallow, me and the wife booked an organised trip to Como for the day from Milan for the wife's birthday last July then we took taxi's everywhere else for the last four days even with 534 euro's worth of fines car hire money and fuel it would still be a better option dont feel to bad Josh.

Looked into it, bit vague but apparently under EU law either two things can happen. The hire company (Hertz) will eventually pay the fines and pass on a ridiculous cost for doing so or the other scenario is they contact a UK debt collection agency to recover the funds.

Canít be bothered with the aggro or stress of it

Anyone looking to hire a car in Italy, be aware of their restricted zones in certain cities. My girlfriend surprised me with a lake como trip in September, over the last week Iíve had six fines at 89euro each drop through the door.
