An addition .... if you are not wanting 1080 output and can put up with 720p then Lightworks is free and bloody good.

I hear good things about DaVinci Resolve, which is free.

Like all video editors it needs some grunt to get it to work.

Having looked at a number of free video editors, I found them all lacking, involved or frustrating. The one I use now is Movie Studio 16 Platinum. No it's not free but it is very powerful (even uses VST). As I said though, it needs a pretty powerful machine otherwise it can be rather poor on the previews and slow on the renders.

It all depends how complicated you want a video to be. As has been mentioned, Windows Movie Maker is free and part of Windows Essentials (which can be a bit of a search to find now). This might help ....

If you want to upgrade to something with a few more bells and whistles in the future, I hear good things about DaVinci Resolve, which is free.

Still think you should consider Windows 10 and Classic Shell.
There's still a possibility you might get Windows 10 for free

If you are not doing anything to complex and are looking at buying an apple computer imovie is built into apple computers and will do a fair job of editing video. Depends if you can wait until you upgrade.

I believe it has been offered before but if needed i would be happy to put an edit together for you from the footage, Will have to dig out my old college training but the principles of how to do it are still in the old noggin

Yes, I knew that was going to happen. I still run XP on one of my machines and they withdrew support for that back in 2014. TBH we are looking at Apple when we replace our PCs and laptops.

Cheers to everyone who has posted with help and advice.

Ken just in case you are not aware Windows 7 goes end of life in Jan 2020. So there will be no more seccurity updates. So it maybe a good time to upgrade and consider a new machine for video editing.

Ken, depending how complex the editing is and how much drop me and line and I could put it together for you. I do owe you for the Le Queroy advice after all.

If you want to try Windows 10 then add Classic Shell
It can make Windows 10 look like Windows 7. I use it and think its great

Thing is, you do need a bit of power to edit video's, so all those light and free solutions leave a lot to be desired. Having said that, you could look at movavi, free version with branding, all those free one's have that. If you like it, it's only 2 kg of trigga for a lifetime of editing, so yeah

Windows 10 comes with a free, very, very, simple video editor, so should you wish to upgrade that's also an option.
