Possibly because they lowered their 90kph speed limits to 80kph and NEVER changed the signs !!! BEWARE

The French government gives on 9 January 2018 a statement to define 80 km/h (instead of 90) as a standard speed limit on secondary network, due to the many fatalities existing on this network. This occurs after an experimentation which included a speed limit change from 90 to 80 between 2010-2015 and 2015-2017 seemed to show it is possible to reduce fatalities.

The 80 km/h national limit enter into force on 1 July 2018. THIS IS IN PLACE

AS PER POST 52 ! ! !

I got a fine in holland at xmass , at least it was sent in english after about three weeks.

By the way when you come out of calais heading north on the motorway to belgium/holland there are speed cameras on both sides near the big blue factory in the 90km/h zone. I have seen the cameras flashing people.

It still amazes me that people often wait 6-12 months for their foreign adventures to begin only to leave things till the last minute and feel the need to speed...Chill out a bit as late is better than never (or a mahoosive fine).

Once whilst driving to Dijon a car came past me with the driver obviously fast asleep. I slowed things down for a few kilometres to let him get well clear.

If the fines are coming through in French, send it back recorded delivery asking that they translate it to English, i suspect they may bin it as it will probably cost them more than the fine is to get the translation.

I think when they changed the speed limits in France in July thats when the crack down began ? lots of my French friends and relations got done

The speed limit on many A and B roads in France was reduced to 80km/h (50mph) Ė in a bid to save up to 400 lives a year.
Came into effect on July 1,2018
the reduction from 90km/h (56mph) will affect around 400,000km of departmental roads across the country and comes in response to an alarming rise in road deaths.
