Slightly o/t, but this is an issue most venues need to address, imo. 50% up front for a booking 2 to 3 years in advance? Pffft.... should be a minimal holding deposit with the 50% payable a year before. Gives owners plenty of time to fill any dropouts.

lol if you own a lake you just take deposit for 5 years in advance and you made money even if you sell all your fish inbetween... what a joke... carp anglers must be the most naive persons out there...

Outrageous really. Stock stolen fish, take anglers money, anglers discover truth so cancel, said venue won't refund! Great customer service that!

After booking 3 years prior our group pulled out one year in advance of the trip after the 90lb common was removed, we lost our full deposit. I guess that's business but it became a point of principle to some, that and the catch reports were not vey promising anyway.

You would think a full refund of your deposit would be allowed if you find out you are fishing for stolen fish and don't want to do so.

This post is not about the well documented events of 2018 on Du Bois but an attempt to try to help people like us that booked well in advance but struggled to find out much about the place after that. Due to the events of 2018 useful independent information was hard to find, which if youíre going out there is not ideal. Mention Du Bois and here we go again the missing big common theme.
Anyway, the lake is 4.5 acres in size with an island and we was told held a stock of 80 fish, have to say I did not see much evidence of that on our week but who knows. There is no weed in the lake and it did flood last winter, water was not clear, again not reading anything into that I'm just stating the facts.
4 anglers is the max in our opinion, 3 ideal, facilities are ok, shower and toilets clean. Particles and pellets which you have to buy on site are crap and were overpriced I thought.
The bailiff or to be more accurate the bloke who opens the gate is called James, seems a decent bloke although is quiet and vague about most things, probably due to what happened last year.
There is a secret FB page which James is the administrator for so if you want recent catch reports before you go out that's the only option unless someone posts elsewhere etc. Have to say itís all a bit hush hush, they do food packages but we only found that out when we got there, maybe our team leader should have asked. Rules are on their website and have not changed.
Don't expect a lot of action, average is 7 runs per week, although looking at the on-site catch report book some anglers have been lucky, seems to fish better in the warmer months, June-August ish. Its tough fishing, fishing is mostly to tree lines and snags, the fish didn't really show much. Not many fish come out at night looking at the catch report. Place is stuffed with small fish and bream which were a right pain.
Job to know what the stock is but only a couple of fish have reached 70, and they have not been caught for 2/3 years according to James. There is no other 80 lb commons in there. There are 20ís and 30ís in there so just because you get a run donít think it will be a PB.
It fished crap when we was there which was frustrating given all the other lakes around it fished well the same week, but that can happen I guess. It has not fished well in the weeks that followed our trip whilst other places nearby have.
Would I go back, no, not because we had a bad week but because there are better places IMO and I did leave thinking that there are a few stories about Du Bois that we were never told about. At the time we booked there were allegedly 2 x 80,s in there. You cannot transfer your booking (that what we were told) so any deposit is lost if you pull out, maybe there are some mitigating circumstances but I doubt it as they can still then sell the week for the full amount.
To confirm I have nothing to do with Du Bois, had never fished it before and have no opinion regarding what happened last year.

Think that might be just a bit of backlash and vindictiveness on what previously happened, possibly justified, but I would like to know what happened to the other Chanty common which was supposedly also in the lake?

I heard they had a fish kill late in the year, but that came from a French local
There's a secret Facebook page apparently for paying guests only

A substantial weight has been returned to the Public water that it was stolen from in the first instance, apart from that, I have no idea and nor do I care.
