I'm not sure that the properties bought were at a vastly inflated price.
Recent estimates are that the project is 100million short on property costs over initial estimates

I'm not sure that the properties bought were at a vastly inflated price. Compulsory Purchase Orders are just that, no choice, no haggling, this is what you get.
It's a massive white elephant, it will create jobs, how many will go to EU nationals?
There, I'm a dirty racist xenophobe.

No chance mate, too much has been invested already to stop it now.
I saw the initial site investigations going on in the colne valley five years ago and knew at the time that all the protesting would be in vane, too many backs being scratched and I really doubt the true costs will ever be revealed.
When projects of this size start you will not ever stop them, remember cross rail ? They decided they needed too sink a massive shaft just off the Tottenham Court Road, no planning permission, reviews or any sort of consultation they designed it and built it.

doubtful HS2 will be cancelled, should be IMHO, but doubt it.
Lots of investment planned up north on the back of it and HS3 is being mapped north east at present.

If it does get binned just think of the vast number of properties brought at over inflated prices and then being "sold" back to the market to recoup some cash.

You almost can predict some fresh company backed by MP's and their mates somehow managing to get the properties cheap to sell on

It's not reams of dialogue but worth a read about the spin and BS those with vested interests gave.
