I was replying to post 17. meaning if a customer wasn't willing to pay at least some up front I wouldn't take on the job.i was stung on a ceiling I put up in a shop many moons ago. waited and waited for the money in the end got fed up waiting.they forgot I still had some keys for the shop so one night went round there, let myself in took some ceiling tiles out, tied a rope around some main bars, tied other end to my vans bumper and pulled the lot down..I still didn't get paid

We supply and fit aluminium windows and doors...always take 50% deposit or wont do the job... covers materials and manufacture costs... if we get knocked its only the fitting and profit margin lost. If they cant afford the deposit then they cant afford the work to be done

I wouldn't entertain starting any job without all material costs paying upfront and stage payments agreed before hand , there are many more rouge customers than there are dodgy builders .
At least with the material costs paid for the worst case scenario is that you only have to cover any wages being paid out for that stage of the build rather than swallowing the entire build costs if a customer decides that they aren't going to pay.
It also shows commitment from the customers side from the offset .
If I lose work because of it that's more than fine , if they cant afford to finace their own project from the start then that's not my problem , I'm not an extension of a customer's bank account.

I assume you would be willing to build and pay for someone's 5 bed house to be built and wait to get paid at the end ?

You will have to pay for a companies house check.
This will give you their credit rating which should tell you everything you need to know.
Turnover or profitability is not what you should be looking at.
I would definitely not be paying anything upfront, if they cant afford to finance a job I wouldn’t bother.

Bugger any % upfront and the other wants 60% after a week, is it a fair cost to the works to be undertaken and time frame? as you suggested after week one leads me to believe that we could be saying at least 2 weeks could be as much as a months worth of work you might have a triple bay garage, scenario is its two/three weeks worth of work for say 15'000/20'000 grand including materials they do a week and have say £1500/2'000 worth of material in the job to get going end of week one and you've got to shell out 9'000 to 12'000 grand right o.

Either way If they cant stand the cost of starting a garage conversion for say two weeks then asking for a draw they aint much of an outfit in my opinion.

Different scenario Wayne I know but I'm working for GallifordTry on one project at the moment standing 30 to 40 thousand a month in material and labour being payed 45 days after end of month invoice and they don't pay in the month of December I have just had to stand that for 60+ days different scale same theory.

That's how you used to get your work wasn't Jim.
Glad to see you're trying to keep on the straight and narrow since you got out, was it that shower episode that changed you?
