Nice little read, well done indeed

Its actually inspired me to have another go, as a kid i lost a good barbel float fishing in the Thames after having it almost beaten and the only one ive actually caught was out of lake at about 3 pounds so to me it doesn't really count

New barbel rods & reels were received Monday and put to use Wednesday. Back on the Yorkshire Derwent for a couple of hours. Within 20 minutes had a slow take and landed a PB branch! Wiped out both rods so had to rechuck them both. 10 minutes later one ripped off and...

Had another go on a different stretch of the Yorkshire Derwent on Monday evening. Straight down after work, rods were in for about 6.15pm. River was a bit deeper and slower than the stretch I fished before, and honestly I wasn't feeling it at all. However, come 7.30pm with dusk approaching and the wind having dropped, the river seemed to come alive. Fish topping, knocks on the rod tips, and shortly after a screaming take followed by a good battle...

Another lovely barbel, which oddly weighed exactly the same as the first one I caught last week! 6lb6oz. Called it a day after that, rather happy!!

I'm guesting on a Trent syndicate next Monday, can't wait for that! (Hopefully christen my new barbel gear
)

Thanks all. Would appear my fingers have slipped on a few buttons this afternoon and soon I'll be in possession of some barbel rods and reels

Lovely fish mate well done, that dark ones a lovely unusual colour, looks like it should have from a gravel pit.

Nice fish. Still remember my first barbel, similar size. The fight is incredible. Imo pound for pound a river barbel is the hardest fighting fish. They can get quite addictive..

A good friend of mine who is a very competent river & barbel angler showed me the ropes last night, it's something i've wanted to do for a few years now but only just got round to. We fished a local stretch of the Yorkshire Derwent, a place close to my heart as I fished it loads as a kid, but only ever caught small stuff - dace/roach/gudgeon/minnows etc!

To date (and at 41 years old) I had never caught either a barbel (i've lost a couple of them in my yoof) or a 'decent' chub so either was the target for me, but i'd have been happy to see the pro catch one

I bunked off work a little early yesterday and headed to the river. Lovely stretch. Rods out for about 5.15pm and couldn't believe my luck when the first rod i'd cast (which was not where I had been told to cast it ) hooped over after 30 minutes and I was in! After a spirited scrap, my mate netted me my first ever barbel at 6lb 6oz. Absolutely made up and special because of where it had come from, childhood dream ticked off!

Had another later in the evening around the 4lb mark, then lost another - before finally catching a PB chub just shy of the 4lb mark. Was a thoroughly great evening. We fished until 11.15pm but the fishing was quiet during the darkness and was happy to call it a day.
