Been a good summer, most of the takes are coming from surface baits.

Again not 100% sure its 13 for the night, I have packed up by 8 for work whenever I have done nights there, you might need to buy a day ticket from the machine for the day if you are staying???? Best to ask when you book.

You are allowed to park on the police bank, Ive done 2 nights and was allowed to take the car in both times (2nd time had to wait as the park was busy though). Had to leave for work by 8am and the gates were still closed so had to drive round the lake to get out. Not sure if this is the done thing and judging by the glares I got its not a popular move but needs must lol.

update - 13 for mon-thurs 15 fri-sun

night fishing from one (police) bank only...

the only thing i see a problem with is leaving your motor in the renowned dodgy car park and having to leave your gear in the morning to renew your patking ticket!!

unless of course you are allowed to park over on the police bank which i very much doubt?

Yes night fishing is allowed now its 13 for the night, you need to book 24 hours in advance through Gerald the bailiff in the tackle shop. You can only fish the feild side though not the river side and they let you bring your car in to unload if its not too busy. Gates are closed until 8 am so if you need to leave early best to leave it in the car park.

i believe so as i went on sunday and people were turning up for the night left right and centre.

for the record i had 11 fish from 15lb with a nice 26lb original common

not a lot else was caught the carp gods were looking down i guess

its ashame you cant put in any bait to hold the fish otherwise you could have a BIG hit!

Ive seen photo's of the 33 common so i know thats not a myth.
My brothers, brother in law told him there was a 37 out recently, he's a member and fishes it a lot but I dont know who he heard it from and my brother didnt get any details on whether it was a mirror or common so cant comment on weight gain of the big girl. I tend to take these things with a pinch of salt until i see proof so we shall see.

It did do a 33Lb common last year but don't know if it would have gained that much weight in a year, but I might be wrong.

it's about time the club that put those stupid rules on there realised that carp fishing has taken over the match scene, i can understand and agree with some of the rules but think many of them are over the top. pay for parking, day ticket, and basically fish hook baits with pva bags for pastey looking carp....no thanks ...if anyone does like that sort of thing the club has taken on fairlands valley in stevenage and placed the same silly rules on there...wonder how much money the club is losing because of this? walking the dog round regulary iv'e never seen the place so empty of anglers, had fished the place for over 20 years on and off before the refurb without these rules, hardly ever had fish belly up, no blue/green algae etc etc and the place got packed, so why the rules change seems to me the clubs turning anglers away rather than making an income on the money spent renting the place.

The bailiff and the rules - Well you just have to put up with them - I disagree with them but not alot can be done, It's a match orientated lake, always has been, always will be and the carpers will NEVER win

My top tip is get there early, and try and get peg 5 or the oak.

If you don't get those swims, head down to the other end and go as far as you can down there.

Ignore the middle of the lake, and my top tip is GET ON THE ZIGS!!

yea it was an evening session off the top eventhough there were hardly any on the top so i fished one 2 rod lengths off the bouy and on down into the bay. But i did get a couple off the top

what i meant is that i havent done a full proper session (all day) down there.

Walked round the lake a few times in the last 2 weeks and seen a lot showing on the surface.

Think we need another couple of weeks of the warm weather before they turn on properly,

Might do an evening next week and see whats happening

Been walking round regularly and a few have been coming out from the usual places. Someone had a 24lber last week, but i think its not up to top speed yet.

I know the new Duck food is going down well in the bay theres a Ghostie down there every time munching on it with about 50 of his other friends.

Hi All,

Haven't been down in a little while, are fruity bolies still working well?

I had a lot of success last time on fruity bottom baits, with a small pva bag/stringer on free offerings.

Whenever I used pellet in the bag (or that one day I tried method feeder!!) I near emptied the lake of snotties. .... no fun!

Evening All,

I fished peg 5 last Thursday (25th) and had 5 carp out and strangely a tench too! Had a few aborte takes too but I was trying a new rig so couldbe part to blame.

Seems like although the water is still very cold the Carp are coming back on the feed.

Get down there lads

Cheers

Dave

Personally i would fish into the boat bay either from the 5th swim on the river side (first 4 are pole fishing only) or the oak tree swim on the field side. If both of those are taken then head down the far end on the river side. When its fishing well you can catch from anywhere, but those are the most productive in my experience.

Thats the deep part down the bottom end, tends to fish alright this time of year but not so well in the late summer. for some reason i always catch simmos down that end and the pretty ones from the boat bay end, is it the same for you??

Was down there on Sunday, fished the last swim on the river bank side due to a match going on. I had a 13lb and a 19lb mirror fishing snow man rig with a few crushed boilies in a PVA mesh bag. My cousin fished the swim to my left and had 3, 12lb, 15lb and a 18lb, he also had a tench,

cheers for your info, aint been there for a good 5 years now but its somewhere to hopefully bend the rod and where the kids can play behind should they get bored.Had a few in the past on fake corn fished in pva bags with corn and pellet, but like you said the bream are a pain.Would you zig midwater or just below surface ?? Probably go with single hook bait with fake corn then to escape a day of bream hauling.

I would look to go early or from about 4 in the evening, feeding times will be just getting light and just before dark.
Fish as close to the boating bay as you can get. I would fish single boilie tipped with fake corn or a small flouro pupup. if the sun is out use a zig, floating bread is a killer bait down there when its warm, i have seen fish feeding on top in the bay the last 2 weekends. Dont fill it in with pellets and grounbait unless you like bream. having said all that they were topping all over yesterday evening they are not hard to spot in there.
Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Its 5.40 per rod. and you have to pay for the car park.
Rules basically
No spodding
no loose floating baits
barbless or microbarbed hooks
pole fishing only first 4 swims on river side
Unhhoking matt and decent sized landing net
no night fishing
No casting into the boating bit
as long as you are sensible its ok the bailif is a pretty decent guy. if you are going to cast into the bay mind the bhoys the carp know they are there and head straight for them.

Ive been walking the dogs round regularly and not many been fishing tbh. it was clear this weekend (1 carper and 2 match guys fishing) but weekend before was frozen over. bailif said a couple had been out from the bay end, casting singles into the bay. He said the match guys were struggling too.
The river was right up this weekend and coming over on the bend so i dont think that was much cop either.

i might do a few hours at the weekend see whats what.

first swim on the opposite side to the river. 2ft from the oak tree. There used to be a bloodworm bed just off it! I used to have hit after hit from there a few years ago.

Trying to find the same Jason, but fished couple of years ago in january and caught once and blanked once. Fish were very localised but once found them easy to catch.
Time i blanked two fella's fishing bay had about 6 out , no one else had a sniff. But that was before this pole fishing rule so guess you cant fish bay anymore, which is a downer but i have caught from other parts in winter

I had a stroll round earlier in the week (Tues evening I think). Was a fair amount of people - maybe 20 or so - most on the river bank. Majority looked as though they were fishing off the top. Saw a few people into fish while I walked round.

Fair play to you buddy - At last you speak some sense. Not having a go at you personally but in fishing as in life you have to be responsible for your own actions. You have said some pretty stupid things on this site & have laid yourself wide open!!!

20 years ago! 25 for me! learnt to fish there, first carp, first double, first twenty.

Kipping in the car park, 6 of us on the high bank. To scared to break the rules for fear of John banning us LOL.

Last time I walked round was about 3-4 years ago, just when it suffered a fish kill, there were people on the high bank casting into the gasping fish and dragging back to try and foul hook em.

Said a few choice words andgot dragged away by the family before I went totaly mad.

Havent actually fished it for 15+ years now.

Mowgli do yourself and leave well alone - the way this lake is run , the awful rulebreaking and the awful angling opitamize everything thats bad about this pastime
Ive held my tounge for weeks on this thread but have had enough of the adoration it gets

Ive had my say and wont be posting on this thread again so im not looking to argue - so you gents can get back to working out new ways to cheat yourselves a few pasties out without getting caught ( unless you suck up to the ballif) - a real shame as this lakd was great 20 years ago

What I'm saying about the river, it may well have been were the lake is now, but the lake was dug DEEPER than the old river bed.

The water level in the lake and river is roughly the same. The lake is 6-10ft deep, the river 2-3 ft deep.

I've just reviewed all your recent posts.
You claim the Baliff "hates" all the carp anglers.
Can you blame him if they all behave like you mate? You think its clever & funny to break rules??
What satisfaction do you get from catching through abusing the rules?
No wonder certain waters develop an "anti carper" atmosphere with clowns like you around!

Im not saying it shows up any more as over the years it would have filled up with silt, I was just proving the river used to run where the lake is now.

I fished it many years ago, one rod only and no need to break the rukes to catch 20+per day

Depths at cafe end 6ft, slowly dropping to 10-11 at swamp end. No bars, gullies or anything, occasionaly soft area, thats it.

If there was a 4ft bar, wouldnt you see windsurfers walking on it, after all they seem to spend more time in the water than on their boards LOL.

As for the river running through it, they appear to believe there own stories. The river is only a couple of feet deep, how would the old river bed show up in a lake 6-10 feet deep?

Taken from there own website

"The Sailing Lake

The Sailing Lake (the south lake) is 6.2 hectares in size. This lake has no islands but is deeper than the boating lake, more than 2m deep in places. Unlike the Boating Lake the Sailing Lake is ground water fed. Before the lakes were built the River Lea used to flow through part of the Sailing Lake but it was re-directed to the west side. Many water sport activities take place here, including sailing, windsurfing and angling. "

A gravel bar?????? Don't make me laugh. You're reading too many magazines & suddenly think you know a bit about carp fishing??
Equally there NEVER was a river either - check back with the Council's planning dept archives.
Get your facts right. Just because you're a plonker doesnt mean everyone else is.

Rubbish lake full of rubbish fishermen who will obviously CHEAT just to catch a fish that any angler with zero skill could catch. You all admit that by only wanting to fish 1 or 2 swims. No doubt full of anglers who also use DEATH rigs just to catch.
Who are you all kidding??? There are NO gullies & NO bars in that Lake. I should know as I have seen it drained dry!!!
EASY FISHING FOR SKILLESS ANGLERS!!

It does get quite busy at weekends, you can usually get a swim though. More people walking past and the boats can be frustrating.

You cant buy 1/2 day or evening tickets, and you have to pay for the car park now.

If you get down after 6.30 in the evening and fish till dark you usually miss the bailiff and the car park is free.

A couple of quick questions if you dont mind chaps.
I fished it a few years ago but that was in the week so:

How busy does get at the weekends and can you purchase half day or evening tickets ?

Thinking of taken the girlfriend to show off that I can actually catch a few now and again..

fishing was slow in the heat, had two carp in the morning at 6ib and 11ib. A couple of bream, and my mates had a couple of tench!? not really seen them out before.

there was alot of fish on the surface which seemed to be catching but didnt really have my surface gear with me, so will probably go back on evening next week to surface fish.

it wasnt to busy in the morning picked up when everyone finished work/school. so glad my exams are over

Well thats not on if its happening. I must admit I used to always fish mixers down there, just catapulting in a healthy amount (a handful or so) every 5-10mins to keep the carp going and then fish a bit of bread on the hook, as they took bread confidently all the time.

If his son is allowed to do it then its no longer a rule surely because apparently it was introduced because the carp were eating too many dry biscuits which were expanding in their stomaches and killing them - that was the method behind their madness for introducing the rule anyway. Of course that ignores the fact that carp actually have teeth at the back of their throats. So if his son is doing it then I'll just tell him that his son is killing the fish and if he still lets him do it then I will do it, as it obviously shows that mixers do no harm to the carp.

We all still use the mixers at stanborough !!!Point is there are load of anglers kids And adults thats really do over use them...Ive Been fishing in swims on the wind side many a times and washed up in front of me have been the contents on two large packets off pedigre chum........Still doesnt in my opinon equate to a bann on the bait!!!! just one of the bailiffs staying on the lake and watching people for overuse....But theres some hope of that!!!!!. A small pva stocking full say 10 mixers every other cast is enough to keep the carp intrested Ive been using some 14mm floating pellets to good affect for a couple of seasons... ziged single pieces off bread is also very good also...Try a surface float setup but instead of the mixer floating add an AA shot and sink it have the float set about two foot i use 10 soft IQ size 8 longshank x
Cant say i know the bailiffs son to comment what his doing or not but having said that I couldnt agree move with shaky if i knew that this was happening i would put a stop to it 100%............ Tight lines

Yeah stanborough is a good water but it was a tricky day yesterday in that the weather was poor, there was no signs of carp during the day, they're spawning at the minute and other anglers weren't catching until around 5pm either. So it was just about casting to the gullies where we know fish use and trying to our presentation and hookbait right. I think if we'd stayed a couple more hours until it got dark we could have had a few more fish. We'll be doing it again soon and when the weather heats up I bet the zig rig will come into its own.

Great result mate and a lovely fish...! Had that happen to me so many times where you hook up and know its a good fish to have the hook pull on you Your right on the fish holding abit extra weight tho Although the 33lb.14oz i had was a male fish after it shooting a load of the old white stuff everywhere when on the mat and trying to take the photos Not a nice thing to happen at the best of times but hey!!!! Find the bailiff ok really the banns in place are for the best for the fishery so im all for that... Learnt alot over the years on that water Applying water craft and watching the water always help and dont sit all day with out a run move and find the fish Fish will always hold in the bay but 2500 carp of which that is estimated to be in the lake are not all in the bay all the time had some great days fishing in some swim that dont get touched tight line all the best

Well done catching the 33 common mate, that's a lovely fish. I think a lot of the fish are carrying extra weight because they are spawning but nevertheless I think there are definitely are few 30s in there and a great stamp of 20s.

Myself and GeorgeH went there yesterday for a session, we got there at around 7am and fished until 8pm. We fished to the gullies in the middle of the lake using a mixture of nash bling popups, pellet, bread, tutti fruity boilies and shrimp & prawn boilies as hookbait and halibut pellets in pva bags. The weather wasn't the best as it was really windy and we experienced on and off showers throughout the day.

The fishing finally picked up at about 5.30pm after a day in which the only fish landed so far were two Bream by George. Then one of George's rods motored off (and this time it wasn't a boat ) and he hooked into a really nice carp which unfortunately came off . That fish took a nash top rod bling pop up topped up with a piece of fake corn. At about 6pm, I switched one rod over from a large halibut pellet fished in the margin to a dynamite spicy shrimp & prawn boilie with a bit of bread flake on the hook and fished it over a small pva bag of pellet and bread mash and whacked it out into the gully. I had a storming run about 30mins later and after a hell of a fight, I landed a lovely 23lbs 4oz mirror carp. Then about 20 minutes later, I had another cracking run on the same rod and landed a carp of about 16/17 maybe 18lbs, we didn't weigh it. Finally, right before we left at 8pm, George had a run and landed a nice double figure carp which fell for a shrimp & prawn boilie. All in all it was a good day .

Here's the 23lbs 4oz mirror:

O and on the subject of the baliff. I haven't fished there before whilst he's been the baliff but I must say he seemed like a nice chap. We had a chat with him and he was very helpful. He was telling us about recent catches inluding the new lake record and he also told us that although dog biscuits are banned you can still use them as a hookbait say when fishing a zig rig. So we got on well with him and he seems like a fair bloke.

Bailiff's perks , Read about 4/5 posts down i think matey may be spot on the money . If you dont like them as much as you make out dont fish there. I wont ever take a drink of anyone i dont like and i wouldnt give money to a business who employed people i didnt like.

If the bailiff lets you do it its fair game, he told us we could so we did. End of. He told us a lot of idiots fish it hence the need for the rules but on this instance common sense prevailed.

We didn't need to cast from pole swims necessarily anyway as i was hitting the buoys with ease from my swim.

At the end of the day all thats required is a bit of logical thinking and all situations can be got round. Its what seperates the men from the boys

Ive seen the bailiff let his mate put biscuits in.

Let someone fish in the oak.

let a member on this forum walk into the first pole swim and cast against the cafe bank

PATHETIC

Maybe it's because you give it large on here, that they're on your case

Or it could be they're jealous that you're such a hauler

when i was down the bailiff was sound, he told me and a mate to walk into the first pole swims to cast next to the buoys etc. he just said not to be seen by the people in the boaters office. anyway even with all these rules etc its still a pukka water for a bend in the rod, and all the 'rules' can be easily broken with a bit of thought

laughable how a club can be so backwards in this day and age, used to love our nights up there back in the late 80,s when wed sneak on after the pub had shut and the baliff had done his walk round, put out a bucket of tigers and an 18 egg mix of bait and wait for it to start, think my best night was something like 35 doubles and a coupla 20s(we were keen back then).we used to be away as the baliff made his way round taking the money int mornin, good times.
didnt know there was a ban on floating baits now,did a feature last summer and got through 15kg of floaters before 9am, lost count of the number of fish. would be a tremendous fshery(not that it isnt already) if they let you fish properly!

also, the reason floated got banned, was NOT becuase of the like of you and i, but for certain COMMITEE members abusing the rules, one day, one of the bayliffs, and i ( a season ticket holder) watched him CATAPAULT out about a dozen pouchfuls of UNSOAKED, straight from the bag mixers to NO showing carp, SEVERAL times

this is appalling, hense the ban

,this is how you will get the rules changed

i started reading this about stanborough and ,well got really bored after a few pages

here is an idea fellas

when you are all grown up, why don't you get a season ticket and go to the AGM and put a serious debate forward to getting floaters reinstated.

hiding and sneaking about will only enflame the situation

also, the reason floated got banned, was NOT becuase of the like of you and i, but for certain COMMITEE members abusing the rules, one day, one of the bayliffs, and i ( a season ticket holder) watched him CATAPAULT out about a dozen pouchfuls of UNSOAKED, straight from the bag mixers to NO showing carp, SEVERAL times

this is appalling, hense the ban

i suggested that the opening up of the oak tree swim and 1-4 to SEASON TICKET holders only, for carp, and if you are found to be abusing rules then you will be banned

,this is how you will get the rules changed
RESPONSIBILTY not stupidity

posting here about your adventures really does not add to any chance of a rule change either

there are many more people affected by this, you are not helping

let the grown ups try to get this changed

Has anyone fished the river next to the lake? How big do the chub and barbel go? Had a half decent chub around xmas of 3ish lb wondered does anyone know any more?

I fished the swim that had a tree that resembled a xmas tree due to the amount of floats that decorated it! Just thinking when the season re-opens might wet a line.

Cheers

Use floating pellets and a dull coloured whittled down pop up as hookbait. Shape it like a mixer or use the plastic version. Job done.

surely floating bread is allowed. When i last read the rules on the back of the day ticket it said no cereal baits which i thought eliminated the dog biscuits. How is floating bread any different from sinking bread? And the same with trout pellets?

in the summer months theres always loads of carp on the surface to be caught. All you need to do is get a pack of chum mixers, soak them and then take them down in a tesco bag or something and hide them. catapult in discretely so no one sees but if they do just say they are carp floating pellets. You can also pva them out. I normally use bread on the hook to be honest as they take it much more confidently. Its great in the summer months when the carp are basking in the sun.

Used to live in WGC, and used to fish it a bit, but the place is a joke now,
and wouldn't give it the time of day.
The Baillifs are exactly the opposite of what you would expect. And saw one get a right pasting of one angler, early one morning.
The bailliff was standing talking to this chap, whilst he was tackling up, and got his baits on and everything, and cast out.........
This dick of a bailliff, then asked him to reel them in, so he could do a rig-check! This guy said are you havin' a laugh? And the bailliff said no, I want to check your rigs, so this guy got up, and beat the -_-_ out of him!

He packed his gear, and whilst doing this, he found the bailliffs phone, so he threw it in the lake!
Quality!

O i totaly agree fella! But like mentioned, lifes not fair, just find ways around it. ie use mixers but do little pva bags so you can get the distance without the controller, so nobody unless looking, will know your doing it!

Or use zigs like you did. Or get there early or in the eve when the baliffs aint there!

What time in the eve do the balifs stop coming around during the week, bit of free fishing!

Well if the rules say you cant use mixers and cast in the bay cant really see what your complaining about- as you are braking the rules! I of course would not do such a terrible, terrible thing as brake rules, well, only when the baliffs are near to see me do it.

But then if he and all his mates do it, then you can just turn around and say you should lead by example! i would use the video setting on my camera/camcorder and record it all. Then say well, see what the governing body see of your great guidance and language/attitude that you talk to youngsters

DIRTY POLISH INBRED C_NTS.

Whist It is not correct to take fish from our waters to kill/eat, I think that it is a culture issue with eastern europeans. I would have thought that education would have been the way forward......

Stanborough has always been the same. I started fishing there nearly 30 years ago when it was one rod only, no casting to the left of the first swim at all, no boilies, no night fishing, no bivvies of any description, no floaters, and any zander caught had to be killed, which just resulted in the river getting stocked with them......it was always rammed with people too.

I remember catching my first perch there on 4lb line and a 7SSG balsa float - I needed 7 Swan to get it over the shelf using my 5ft rod I don't think I'd want to fish there these days. Too busy, and too small to have both boats and anglers on there, it will always cause problems.

There are carp to 20+ in the river, and there are some good'uns in the lake the other side of the road too

The first three swims on the river side are dedicated to pole fisherman now so they are a no go nower days

as know one thought about float fishing for the carp in them swims ? i reckon they,d be fairly easy to catch if there,s that many in there

The first three swims on the river side are dedicated to pole fisherman now so they are a no go nower days. id recommend the oak tree swim, first swim on the field side. Source boilie is a good bait to use fished with a small p.v.a bag of pellets. also iv had a good result on two pies=ces of popped up fake corn on the hair. if the suns out get on the top, they love it!!

P.S. can anyone telol me if that grumpy old baliff still stops people from using dog biscuits in the summer??

i always get told to pack up by some right miserable old git as soon as is is getting a bit dark.

The way i see it is if you can still see the other side of the lake it is not dark, (they really shouldn't have used 100w bulbs in the car park) so its their fault if im a little late packing up

THe night bailiffs can fish it because they apparently prevent others from doing so and from the fish getting poached. Its a load of rubbish i think. Especially when you hear that they don't bother that much - I'd be down there for a week at a time!

Hi Craig,

There used to be night fishing @ Holwell court but when WGCAC took over the fishery they had a vote at there AGM and they decided to end it. Night fishing at stanborough has never been an option for regular members of WGCAC due to insurance - Something to do with the lakes not being inside any kind of fenced off area.

That to one side though - Fair enough if they say it's unsafe to nightfish, That I can take but if you are a member of WGCAC and you become a night bailiff and walk around the lake (supposedly) occasionally you are then allowed to night fish the lake yourself!

So the questin we need to ask is - Why can a night bailiff fish it at night for free if a normal angler cannot pay to fish it?!

Its a joke mate!

So am i right to think the only reason there is no night fishing on stanborough and Holwell court is simply cause they choose to have the rule theres no legal or council reason or any rubish like that ?

Stanborough hasn't been the same since the management of the park closed the 'Oak Tree' swim on the opposite bank from Peg 1. Without doubt it was the best peg on the lake.

I've been fishing stanborough for just under 20 years now and in the last 5 years or so it has gone downhill a bit - A combination of flooding and a disease a few years back have knocked it back a bit - from what i've been told WGCAC only get the lakes from the local council on a yearly lease so it could explain why the lake isn't looking as good as it used to.

Finger's crossed they will get it sorted soon and realise that by blocking the first 4 pegs they are ruining the fishery totally.

Dave
