Not 100% sure on the 400 spec, but think it's basically a higher speed version of the 300 (4.9 to 1 ratio) similar to a 410 but without the roller bearings, and with the "normal" handle.
I had two choices, either use a small baitrunner (5010 GT) or a Mitchell. Modern reels are far too free running to leave the anti reverse off, and too much chance of it getting pulled in as I pour an Oxo with the anti reverse engaged. And an old Mitchell just seemed "right" for the rod.

That's really good getting a JW at that price,I.. think the 400 is a faster retrieve than the 350 Mitchell's, I'm most likely wrong ,but is the 400 the version with roller bearings,I can't remember off top of my head..

The 350 is the older fast version..,

I liked the 410a,with torpedo grip, but I've enough gear now..

I picked this one up for �35, pretty much mint condition, the plastic was still on the corks. I'm going to couple it with a Mitchell 400, just cleaned and serviced a pair of them, so might as well use one.
Your table of tip stiffness matches most of my research, one or two people did say their yellow was stiffer than the green, mine definitely is, by my scientific testing of pinning the top couple of inches to a table and seeing how far the butt end deflects. I'll be using it on a fairly powerfull, deep river, so tend to use the stiffest tip mainly, though I'm going to give it a first outing using the avon top. Seeing the bites is not a problem, sometimes connecting with them can be.

Ged,I have a travel avon ,quiver,11ft long it's my most used rod..

I love how compact it is,my tops quiver tips I mean are,

Red is softest
Yellow is medium use this most
Green ,is very firm ,never used it at all..

I have been lucky enough to get some real nice perch and carp,just using it down the edge,using prawns in hook in a loop method,and light running lead..plus a nice Mitchell 300,..

Good rods,...I tried to get another,but they going second hand on ebay when I was looking for �130.00..

There's a slim chance of one, there is a few in the stretch I fish, but it's very much a winter venue for me, cheese paste and bread mainly. Here's hoping though!

Looking forward to giving it a go, a bit of chubing over the winter and some traditional float fishing for tench next year.

Thanks, after some research I came to the same conclusion. Did a bit of testing last night, the green is the softest of mine, but one of the yellow's is a bit softer than the other. Like you, I suspect I will use the avon top most of the time.

I have a pair of the same Rods

I don't have the three push in Quiver Tips, as at the time I never used them, and gave them away to a friend who's into feeder fishing. As I only ever use them in 11ft or 13ft modes as the 1/4 tc Avon type Rod.

I always fancied a John Wilson Avon back in day, but never got round to buying one. However I picked up a secondhand delux model last week, the one with the dolly butt section to increase length to 13ft. It came with 3 tips, unfortunately 2 are the same, so I've got one green and two yellow tips, the yellow tip is stiffer than the green, but does anyone know if the missing red tip is softer or stiffer than the one's I've got?
