Absolutely fantastic clip,
A lake I fish here on the New Forest has gifted me a few big eels, the biggest during Covid just under 6lb, I was fishing with worms for carp or tench, couldn’t get either but not unhappy with such a specimen.
Tel
👍😢

Fishing for eels has generally been prohibited in Scotland since January 2009 under The Freshwater Fish Conservation (Prohibition on Fishing for Eels) (Scotland) Regulations 2008. In early November 2021 the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) circulated advice on European eels.

What a fantastic video. Used to fish for eels as a youngster at Walthamstow Ressies number three , was plenty of eels in there back in the 80s used to fish the inlet area that looked liked stagnant water but we certainly caught some out of there , great fun on light tackle and float with single maggot , the eels used to play around with the maggots for what seemed like ages before finally giving a decent bite that you could set the hook at.

Allways remember fishing at the junction of the great ouse and the little Ouse nr downham market , an old boy allways used to fish for eels from the back of his boat , he used to throw chicken bones in a few hours before he fished , and he certainly caught his fair share .

Once caught a 6lb eel from the Dagenham Chase and there also was a eel caught at 9lb +
Proper specimen
Also remember going to the Thames Estuary and catching lots of eels from there but people I know who fish there now say you don't catch any eels from there anymore.
As you say Eels are in severe decline

Before the damn otters killed everything in my syndicate water eels were regularly caught many around the 2-3 lb mark, occasionally to 5lb. when targeted with a suitable deadbait, we even devised a "broom bristle" rig to ensure a safe hook hold and subsequent healthy release.
they are a fascinating creature and should be given the similar care and treatment as carp, pike or any other species.
sadly they are in severe decline.

Brilliant video, those eels are something else and his passion for fish care is exceptional.

Not a massive fan of eels myself, but I think that's lack of knowing what to do when ones in the bottom of the net rather than anything else

Cracking vid, obviously a guy with an absolute passion for what he does. However as a result I've now spent the last few evenings watching far too many hours of eel vids on Youtube!!

Something I have never really focused on but as you say Gerry, they are there in lot of waters under the radar because people do not specifically target them, so they don’t come out. The biggest I have ever seen was around 1992 and it was big, had / has a history for doing them and I will say it was 6 plus caught by a tench angler in the morning on meat, a big fish. The guy who ran the place was an avid predator angler and he had taken quite a few large eels as well as pike
