I love my tenkara fishing. From a fishing perspective its so mobile and hours literally drift by.

Have done a little for course species but in rivers / streams.

Mostly for small wild trout though.

check out "discover tenkara" for alot of info / videos.

They do individual guided days (both certified angling coaches ), which teaches you loads, but also is a lovely way to spend a day in a landscape you would have to see to believe. It feels such a privilege to me to be a member.

Yes,I've seen a couple of Benny moments on you tube back along,best one is this guy with a massive salmon, once he'd realised what he had on,the Tenkara was literally chucked in this mountain river,and the rod plus big fish retrieved further downstream,...was interesting to watch..

Thing is tho ,it's so precise,the way the fly is presented,especially if a bow and arrow cast is used..I live virtually close a complex of small lakes,one has massive and I mean massive roach, I plan to walk down every now and again and see what happens, I use the level line as an indicator,if it twitches,I'll gently strike..

It's liberating,as all I carry is triple zoom rod,no reel,and the winder circle,box of flies,disgorger,...thats it ,covert and stealthy..lol

Where I live,there a lots of streams that mimic Japanese mountain streams,perfect for Tenkara,little streams that exit way,way up on rocky cliffs ,all have trout,not massive,but that's not what tenkara is about..its about as pure as you can get in today's modern angling form..

Now I love trad fishing and carping,but when I look at my minimalist carp set up,I think wtf...look at this gear!

I still love it tho..

It does look fun Adam. There is a chap on youtube (Tenkara USA on checking), where the segments of the instructional video are intersected with what I assume are Japanese T fishers on very rocky streams catching beautiful wild brownies, it seems such a back to nature way of fishing, and the way your doing it is very appealing compared to the 'norm' for other species. It's tugging away inside my old grey matter! IIRC

That chap whose fly rods I was watching on Ebay was selling a lot of his traditional fly set up as he had moved over to Tenkara. I assume he'd been doing it for some time as one of the T rods he had for sale was imported from the US. The 2 T rods I saw didn't sell, but the reserve on 1 was �75 and the other �100.

Why does fishing for Carp using Tenkara bring to mind the Benny Hill running sketches for me

What I like about it from a novice perspective is the complete simplicity of it ,all you need is a T rod,I have the maxcatch triple zoom,a level line ,which joins the tippet and the fly of your choice,..casting is very easy,I soon could do it as I watched lots of video on the Japanese masters and Americab guy who is brilliant..

So instead of after work over nighters for carp,I go uber,uber minimal for course fish on a through action tenkara rod,I had lots of rudd n roach and a small perch on reverse hackle kebari flies..

This my kit
Triple zoom
Bi6x of flies
Disorder

80 litre rucksack with ,water filter ,Banshee tent ,mini trangia,therma rest sleep mat ,Snug pak junglebag,first aid kit,bit of food ,all fits in ,off I go..!!

It's liberating and great fun...in America they catch carp on the rivers doing this,as there is no reel,they chuck the rod in the river and run after it ,amazing to see..

The biggest thing I have learnt,is there is zero comparison to pole or whip fishing,as the T rod is specially designed to action through the curve..I like it,great learning curve perfect for ponds and small streams...

Funnily enough a few weeks ago I was looking into Tenkara, stumbled onto a T rod on E-bay when I was looking around at buying my 1st fly rod. I particularly liked the fact that they say it's the action put into the fly that catches the fish rather than the fly itself, something my 84 year old fly fishing neighbour hotly disputed

Also read that in Japan the T fishers are putting carbon rods behind them and returning to cane and that there's actually a very similar old method from Yorkshire of all places. How they differentiate between Tenkara and old style fishing with a whip and say horse hair I just don't know and as for telescopic cane rods!

I still haven't bought a reel, and as for line, it's a mine field to a complete newby!

Yep. Pike and perch on the fly is so good.
Carp can be infuriating if you want to catch with no loose feed, but I�ve had some results
I use a SW 6, 9 and 10wt. Could go lighter for the perch but I like a fly (baitfish) with some size to it. I tried a freshwater 5 and it was hard work getting out the flies I make

Wild Brownies, Fly fishing for them is probably the purest form of fishing there is, love it

I�m a bit spoilt living in the West Pennines; there are streams, brooks and small rivers all over the place that hardly anyone shows any interest in, stuffed with Wild Brownies

Will do Keith, I keep the Tenkara kit in my footwell,so when I do eventually get to my syndicate ,I can target the roach in the margins,and they average well over a pound..

I was so chuffed yesterday,I watched these little black flies,start emerging on the surface,I have only six flies,so matched the one nearest yo the hatch...

And started catching,it was brilliant.

But ,I want a Cornish Brownie,from the river that I learnt fishing on years ago,so my aim is a wild trout from the Valency,nr where it begins..

I�ll have a go for basically any species on the Fly if an opportunity presents itself to me (Within range)

Always have 9ft 8# Fly and a 7ft 3# American Creek Rod with me- it�s brilliant fun catching Rudd & Roach if you find a shoal in the surface layers travelling along the margins

Get yourself a heavier weight Fly Rod Adam and have a go for Jack Pike, casting Pike fly�s + Trace is a bit daunting at first, it feels like your casting a brick!

That sounds interesting..and fun,..thing is though,I'd be scupperd on a Japanese Tenkara rod,as they don't use a reel..its like ultra light pole fishing ,using level line, tippet and a fly ..I've tried and tried on the local streams to emulate these Japanese guys,..

I really enjoyed it though,never fly fished previously, let alone on Tenkara..,watched a guy in the USA hook a big carp,what they do if that happens is throw the rod into the river,and follow it on the bank,my version is 13ft..

Lotto skill in the right hand though, not mine lol

Seen a guy fly fishing for carp at milemead. He did very well on a lake that held carp to 20 lb.

I been using a Triple zoom Tenkara rod,and reverse hackle kebari flies,for rudd and roach...

Its addictive,especially when the sensitive tip pulls right around on a take...its meant for mountain streams,but great on a lake as well..

Anyone else fly fish for other species?
