So it wasn't easy. Not everyone has your self determination and may need help to break through. How many people born into privilege fail in comparison to the wasted lives of those born into poverty?

You are the exception and not the rule (and I'm not being facetious, however much it hurts to call you exceptional.)

What remains is that the majority of us on here hit the jackpot. We were born white, male, straight and relatively comfortably off in one the richest countries in the world. I think I'm hugely lucky and maybe my middle-class guilt is showing but I don't think I would be where I am now had I been born under different circumstances. Empathy is not a bad thing, Ayn Rand was not a nice person.

I wish I could remember where I read it but someone once said something along the lines of “what if the cure for cancer is stuck inside the head of a poor girl in sub-Saharan Africa?” Levelling the playing field will benefit all of us and doesn't have to mean making things harder for the likes of us, just that bit easier for the likes of them.

A lot of us have or do live that life Wayne. But without that couch what would you have done?
That was also not in the current economic situation was it?

Scozza, as I said a few (hundred) posts ago, some people will take the piss whatever. Rise above it, let them get on with it and continue to do the right thing. If 0.001 percent of your tax goes to fund some idle bugger so what, would you really change places with them?

Re the problems of blacks in America. I don't pretend to know what the answer is, but feel blaming blacks in America probably isn't.

Wow Jon,

Respect your honesty mate. I think religion could be a way, something to believe in but the corruption does raise concerns.

This is what the government needs to be looking at, our people, and where we go next.

With all due respect to whoever those professors are BB, I doubt they know much about financial hardship or illegal means of earning being the only avenue that will feed your family without welfare handouts.
As we know from Covid reporting worldwide, figures are easily manipulated, misunderstood or misreported

Dear BB,

I wholeheartedly refute your somewhat slanderous accusations.

While it may seem apposite to reflect upon the impact the variety of measures implemented by both Democrat and Republican administrations have had on the circumstances and wellbeing of inner-city black communities in the United States, and to opine on the relevance and importance of a range of social factors on the ability or otherwise of young blacks to make a successful life for themselves may be tempting, I would like to remind you of the occasional situation which may arise upon one overlooking a half-used bucket of previously prepared particles, and leaving said receptacle forgotten and neglected for weeks on end, which when opened presents a scum-covered surface with the watery liquid below being grey in colour, with flecks of putrid solid matter and an overwhelming stench which can only be likened to children's vomit, left in a car on a hot day...

That's your aftershave, that is. You splash it all over.

Jon

Hi Jon,

I don't think it's a case of taking the piss, it's what we do to address the issues that will make all the difference. The easiest thing is to say there is not a problem , when clearly there is. It's about filtering out the people, who really need the support and people who are milking it for me

Hi Jon,

So I was right about the trolling then. No considered opinion just the usual boring insults.
I'll just go back to ignoring you as usual.

BB.

Scozza, when I said 'taking the piss', I meant your 'milking it'.

I find the arguments for universal basic income quite persuasive. A 'rich' economy like the UK should be able to give everyone enough to survive on, no matter what their motivation is. Categorising folk according to their worthiness for help is a recipe for disaster.
Are you sure?
