I'm no mathematician but I did get 5th year advanced C&G so thought I could help my daughter with her homework.
To be honest the question were set in a such a way I couldn't understand what they were asking to me it didn't make mathematical sense.
So she got the hump asked her mum instead

Fair point though. You need a very good grasp of written English to do well in maths exams these days...
It's an eye opener seeing what the expectation is for year 6 kids to achieve before darting secondary school. Good that more people are getting the chance to see it too.
BBC schools and bitesize have good resources if you get stuck fellas

I'm pretty good with practical maths, mental arithmetic, geometry, I can cut a hipped roof from a few measurements using pythagoras theorem but I can't make head nor tail of my daughters year11 homework.
Her teacher tried to enlighten me on the usefulness of quadratic equations but my word is that the most arse about face way of working
And is there a practical application to learning to expand or simplify equations in algebra, that stuff makes my eyes hurt

They did do until I told them why I do it. I do it because they've learning difficulties so I'm sure it can only be of benefit.

I've never had a use for quadratic equations but I did like solving them. You know when you've got the right answer because when you put it back in it all works out.
when S (satisfying)=YES + U (useful)NO= W(waste of time)
In other words I wouldn't waste my time on them nowadays
Just don't tell the kids, if I had to do it so should they

NHS and McLaren have reverse engineered a piece of existing equipment and come up with a device that gets oxygen to the lungs without need for a ventilator.
If it's approved, mclaren can make 1000 a day which will free up ventilators for the most critical patients.
Maybe moving forward, cutting edge industrial engineers will remember this and continue to give valuable help to the NHS... one can hope eh?

Hi Mal,
I've seen this news and in fact, it's Mercedes who have worked in conjunction with University College London's mechanical engineers and University London Hospital clinicians to adapt and improve an existing breathing aid. It has already been approved by the Medical Association for NHS use and is currently on trial in the ULH. This process has incredibly been made in only 10 days. It's expected to be given the go ahead, then Mercedes can start producing them from next week at a rate of 1000 per day.
This device is non invasive like a full respirator, and forces air/oxygen into a patient's lungs and is for the less critical patients, so leaving the full respirators for the critically ill.
Really good news and great credit to those technicians who worked night and day to produce this life saving device so quickly.
