anti - you racism, surely?

'White folk being just as disadvantaged as any other ethnic group, but not going on about it all the time' sort of thing.

of course society isn't fair

I mean we haven't even got the MOWO awards ffs!

if you really want that then maybe the BBC Proms is for you. Although I do hear that they've gone a bit snowflake lately and started playing music by people from different ethnicities....

I'm back :0

we're on the slippery slope to a fairer society... woooahhh..... watch out everyone!

Mal if you level up one side you have to level up is both sides so get rid of discrimination you have to remove positive discrimination. Both of these moveable feasts are not an overnight cure that people believe it could be.

A scenario Boris wants to hire 20,000 new police officers, to provide a reflection of the populace, does he only employ BAME candidates to the exclusion of all others, is that racism or postive discrimination? or does he empoly those who will be good at it whether they be BAME, White or other?

We now have mob rule over the statue, de platforming and censoring of media, that is a slippery slope. Dare i mention Stalin, Mao and Hitler all used mob rule, de platforming and censoring of media. As the quote if you don't learn from the lessons of history you will repeat the mistakes (probably wrong wording but the sentiment is good).

I don't give a **** that statue in Bristol and if others are removed but do the removals democratically and in a balanced way. Who decides what are removed and the criteria for removal? History is there, don't deny it but learn from it!

I heard on the radio driving home that Sir Keir Starmer and his team have released a picture of them taking the knee, its only a week to late in my opinion. If you wanted to do it, do it when its relevant as per Barry Gardiner (although he's a pratt for his ignorance of social distancing, etc...) not when they think it gains them the most political advantage for them!

Its was a good 48 hours away from internet access

Edit.... please everyone thinking of marching, protesting or fighting this weekend we are still in a COVID 19 pandemic and still to many are getting infected and dying, so be safe out there!

Can we stop saying 'slippery slope'?

Every time I read it I think of 'It's a Knockout' and sing the tune in my head for a bit, which is annoying.

Hiya Fishie

first off - did you catch anything?

I'm in absolute agreement with what you say about the statues. I've posted already on it (maybe too many times as there's a count apparently). Remove them properly and safely, document it and use the whole exercise - and this time in history - as a way of teaching / learning about the sins of the past and how in 2020 the world has changed in attitudes to slavery and oppression. You'll find that most sensible people are saying the same thing - nobody, least of all the ancestors of those who were slaves - wants that history forgotten (although the Scots professor on the news the other night did suggest that those with racist attitudes might want to deny it but for their own agenda).

I also like that quote. 'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.' It's really good - Churchill adapted it for a speech.

In terms of levelling up - if you level up one side then you can create your equality. If that was to happen there would be no need for positive discrimination. Until that happens, unfortunately there is the need. That applies to race, gender, various inequalities. Then hopefully moving forward you increase the level of both sides at the same rate and at the same time and we all benefit.

Agreed about the politicians too - I posted on the coronavirus thread while you were on wife imposed exile

Have a good day man - hope your dad is well

edit - sorry scozza, got in there too quick!

Can we stop mentioning ‘It's a Knockout‘? Uncomfortable reminders of Stuart Hall and the Duke of York.

not for this thread but I was a blanker ****er

Dad was home a day and collapsed again the next day so back to hospital so not good

Back on thread

Discrimination leads to positive discrimination leads to discrimination leads to positive discrimination..... Both have to go to provide equilibrium Its not an overnight repair and I do not believe that todays society is as broken as its made out to be!
But with the mob rule shown last weekend will only rile people and next it will be the right wing out counter protesting and protecting statues. The message and feeling will now move from its initial valid protestations into a left/right power struggle and the message will be forgotten.

They lost the general public when the first missile was thrown, the first punch connected and the first horse harmed. Its now moved onto censoring TV programmes and films, companies supporting the sentiment but then again to late and i cynically think its free advertising and arguments over historical monuments.

How does this help heal the cracks in society, it alienates one to embrace another, when all should be embraced!

Another National Trust property built with the profits from the slave trade I expect.

Sorry about your dad mate - my best wishes of course.

On thread - Thousands more peaceful protesters than riots / vandalism both here and in the US, but that doesn't make for sexy news does it? The trouble last week with the police horse etc.was after the main protest but that line was thrown away by the newscasters.

I'm happy to alienate far right white supremacists.

But you are right that the 'general public' need to see the positive aspects of this movement. It feels different than before. It feels like more people see the importance and more people are supportive. Hopefully the idiots who will look to undermine it all won't become the focal point.

Jon - very funny

As with children tell them to do something its done begrudgingly but encourage them to do it and they will do it with glee

The media has caused so much division in society in recent years its unforgivable. But good news travels in a slower lane than bad!

I was watching the news updates on the internet by the BBC and SKY on the london protest. Just after the violence started on SKY the BBC live updates closed, said goodnight and they would be back tomorrow

You're thinking of St Ewart's Hall, Dulwich College, where it is rumoured that a certain former pupil spent his time reciting Hitler Youth songs when, long before the internet, it was really quite hard to find the lyrics.
