It's mortality rate may not be all that impressive, however virtually none of the population has immunity to it.
The dubious virus had our ICU running at 5 times normal capacity with a few members of staff being treated - we've never had that from flu.
Pure mortality rate figures don't really give the full picture, length of treatment required for those who survive, long lasting disability, morbitiy, capacity of the system and impact on other services all need to be considered.
Even if you are not at high risk wearing a mask may save someone else who is. Even if 100,000 people had to wear masks to save 1 person I'd say it's worth the inconvieniance.

The way I see it is initially we didnt EVEN have enough for our hospital staff and doctors to wear ? so all these muppets bleating on about we should have worn masks from the start 
2 reasons
1. we didnt have anywhere near enough masks
2 . medical advice THEN was it wasnt that effective
however since then time has elapsed we got enough masks now AND more importantly and its now pretty much a PROVEN CASE that masks can and DO make a significant reduction in cases as the other countries that mask wearing was made compulsory are doing so much better that other countries that havent

Totally agree with Gerry. However in my experience, the percentage of people wearing them on public transport is way too low and enforcement is virtually nil. I've always been of the opinion that it's pointless to introduce a new law unless it's going to be vigorously enforced.

They've actually said to wear face coverings, not masks, which are to be used by medical staff.
They want us wearing them to protect others not ourselves. The ffp3 masks I have for work expel all the air and filter on the intake so essentially it's no better or worse without it for the purpose the government want.
And now I'm almost out I have to breathe in mdf dust or pay top whack for ffp3 or respirator filters.

That's exactly my thought, the industry I work in involves wearing masks all the time and our suppliers were selling everything they had in stock to the NHS , consequently there were none available for general sale.
As they are now more readily available we are being told to wear them which I am totally in agreement with but I can't help thinking that we would have been wearing them weeks or even months ago if stocks were not in short supply.

Unfortunately the Great British Public contains so many halfwits that the govt couldn't say this before, because they wouldn't have understood or wanted to understand the difference between face coverings and masks, and would have been elbowing pensioners out of the way to get medical masks, nicking them from hospitals and generally causing havoc. I find it annoying have to now go into shops wearing a mask.
I can sort of understand the logic behind wearing masks from the start, but now? Isn't that like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted? And...what about Sweden. Didn't go full retard like we did and they look golden now, whereas us, no doubt we'll keep having flare ups.
I'm still undecided whether it's suspicious or just that the government are being forced to cater to a baying crowd, you know, like those same types that like to flex their leftist muscle getting people de-platformed for the most trivial of things.

We're going to have flare ups until all the susceptible people have caught it and died, and herd immunity is established. Which was the goverments plan in the first place, until thousands of people dying made them bottle it for fear of the backlash about doing nothing. Now they are going to do the same thing subtly and hope nobody notices. Be prepared for distractions in the press and tv.

Been the plan all along, just dressed up in frilly knickers to limit hysteria.
And the reason masks weren't on the agenda at the start, everyone was meant to be in lockdown and those who went out were well aware there was a potentially deadly respiratory virus about. If you really need telling a mask may help in those circumstances you're probably not going to be a loss to mankind

Belgium with a population of over a million plus more people yet double the death rate of Sweden?
It's going to take a long time to sift through the data to come to any real conclusions, say like age of population more likely to be affected, ethnicity makeup etc.

Masks do work just not the ones 99% of the population are wearing, from the ones described on here from tackle companies etc to the throw away Blue ones most seem to like, absolutely pointless.
Funniest thing is you can also pick this up from surfaces so one without the other (gloves) again makes the whole thing pointless.
Wearing a mask is a bit like only fencing 70% of a lake in the hope you keep the Otters out.

I thought same thing - went into the supermarket yesterday and many of the staff not wearing masks. Really makes no sense and many customers were taking theirs off after seeing this. Total farce. Would have made sense to me back in April, but now infection rate are low and social distancing/awareness in place, really... it just isn't necessary IMO and they offer jack in terms of protection - virus can be absorbed through contact with eyes or ears - so unless you're wearing a full bio suit... what a sh1t show this country has become. The ONLY reason to wear a mask is because you have to. Still too many knobs out there who can't cope if you walk within 6 ft of them. I always have a little cough when I come across them
