ive only fished abbey twice but always baited heavy fished fox 3 years ago landed 63 carp over 280kg of bait fished heron in may this year every 1 said there not having it dont put much bait out i used close to 200kg landed 17 carp couple of mid 50s including single scale so i think worth taking plenty of particals can always bring it home

hi all i am new to this. i have just booked to fish heron next year in april any tips on the point swims if possible. i had a walk round it this year and i think its a nice swim just hope i can get on it next year. cheers guys

Hi mate..
Best tip for fishing 19 is.... Don't rush in there without having a bloody good look elsewhere first! Fish aren't (always) in residence round there at that time of year. Far better to attack the front right hand side of the island from 9, or get in 11, 12, 13 or 14. Again, 14 is a honey trap for bods due to the 'amount of fish it produces' BUT everything is relative and if u stack up what the rest of the lake produces during the course of a season then I'd only ever get in there if the water is cloudy
if it's gin clear then swerve that one n all!! A dark horse for early season is 23, especially if there's a strong (and WARM) SW blowing!
Check waaaay back on this thread for a more informative run through of all the pegs on Heron and if u ask nicely, hopefully some swim maps for the lake along with some for Kingfisher and Attila within a fortnight, work permitting....

Ru seems like the most in demand man on the whole forum!!
Would like some advice on bait quantity needed for a four day trip, any advice would be great but if the star man RU could comment it would make me feel a whole lot better lol..
Rig wise i am thinking bigger hooks/ hooklinks for this trip, 25lb coated on a size 4 curve shank fished 'KD' style in going to the order of the day for me.. sound ok or maybe go larger?

I'm far from the star man here (although I am flattered by the comment LOL), I just happen to have wasted a vast amount of my life fishing over there!
I'd aim to take 1kg of Boilie per Rod, per Day and double that of Pellet! You shouldn't go far wrong with that amount? If you're a Particle man then I can also recommend that a decent splodge of Partiblend / Red band around each bait wouldn't hurt. The Red band is useful in particular as it requires very little preparation and also seems to keep better in the heat than some other bits, like Maize.
Regards what sort of Boilie to take, you'd be a fool not to consider something from Mainline, in particular the Cell and Activ-8, which have gone into the all the lakes on the Complex in vast amounts over the past couple of seasons! Their Mark One has also been responsible for some big hits of fish over the past 12 months by people lucky enough to be able to get their hands on it
Failing that, any quality food bait from Companies such as Baitcraft will see you right. Their Super K was behind one of the greatest catch reports ever seen by a single Angler (on Heron lake) last December!
As for Rigs, this is a personal one and I'd suggest sticking to your guns here and using whatever you're happy with at home BUT with the addition of MUCH bigger hooks! I only use size 4's when my 2's have run out!!!!
Mine are constructed from 8" of RigMarole's 25lb (camo) Hydrolink, I strip the FluoroCarbon out from inside it leaving a 7ish" stiff boom and a 1" hinge (a la Combi rig) before the hook, attach a Fox Line aligna (I'm too lazy to carry a kettle just for steaming Shrink tube lol) and a heavy Korda sinker just where the stiff part of the rig meets the soft, so that it all sits nice and tight to the Lakebed! At the top end I simply tie a Figure of 8 knot and add a Fox Anti-tangle sleeve to cover the Kwik change Swivel.. Very basic (and probably nowhere near good enough for some of the Jimmy Saville brigade) but strong as hell and has never let me down! I use either Fox XSC, SSSP or Atomic Grabba hooks in a size 2, it's nothing to do with French fish having bigger mouths, simply that a) They are bonier than those of UK fish due in part to some of their diet consisting of 8-12" Crayfish and b) I feel that due to the extra size and additional gauge of the wire in these hooks, they are heavier and therefore, drop into the bottom of the mouth far quicker.... Just got back from Abbey after a swift 72hr social visit and thought I'd let you all know that after a slow fortnight on Heron, the whole Complex has started to fish it's bits off!
Nearly all (9 of the 13 I spoke to) of the guys fishing on Fox had managed to bag a Carp over 40lb this weekend as well as some cracking mid and upper 30's!
As I understand it, Heron had been tough going recently but a couple of lads from Leicester were popping their French cherries along with their mate, Paul Hughes and they'd managed the best of both worlds.. Gary was hauling from peg 11 and I think I'm right in saying had banked at least 8 Carp by the time I left this afternoon (they arrived on Saturday), while his friend had back to back 50's (including the Grey lady) by doing something very clever and not fishing at the maximum available range like everyone else.. These came from right under the tips after he'd spotted a couple of little holes in the weed and primed them for 24hrs before dropping a bait on each, top dangling!
Due to the fact it was more of a social event for me, I hadn't bothered to check the availabilites beforehand (but still took a rod or 3 just in case!!) and was a bit p*ssed off to find out that both the main lakes were full so settled down for a few hours on Attila. It turned out to only be a few as well due to the fact I hadn't packed the front to my Brolly system and after enduring about 30 Mozzie bites between 8pm and 2am, I reeled in n kipped in the car.... Still managed 5 Mirrors of 24.02, 28.10, 31.00, 32.04 and 34.08, going to show that if it's regular action from a quality stamp of fish you're after, Attila is improving month by month and is well worth considering if you don't want to tough it out for a proper big 'un on your holidays?!
Aside from that, Kingfisher is fishing well with the chap on peg 5 having a cracking run of Carp up to mid 40's and a couple of token Catfish to 55lb too!
Don't miss out on the fantastic food available at the brand new Restaurant which is now open either, I recommend packing a change of (smart) clothes for it!
And finally, I can't believe anybody's taken the time out of their life to come on here and say the Complex is weedy this year?? There's less growth anywhere, including in the margins, than I have seen at Abbey since 2008.. Boats ARE still allowed but are definitely NOT necessary people, just tackle up and prepare accordingly (i.e not with 12lb Fluoro and 1oz leads that aren't heavy enough to drop off on the take!!) and you'll have no problems whatsoever.. I'd go so far as to say that I struggled to find any worthwhile weedbeds to fish to?
I shall try and have a natter with Hans on a more regular basis so I can keep you all posted with catch reports and any other news as it happens. Tight lines,

Having said that, there are a few chaps over here who do a short term loan service.... Just make sure you choose carefully!!!! I was at Abbey last weekend and 2 guys there were up a creek because the one they had got from Kent somewhere didn't work!!!! The dude who'd rented it then spent an hour on the phone explaining they were gonna lose their deposit plus incur all the additional costs necessary to fix it rather than offer a solution himself?!?! Pleasant!
You could try Jay Folly though, I don't know him personally and he's a West ham fan so not sure I want too LOL but he has a good reputation and his contact details can be found on Facebook!

Think they had it a bit tough from P9 but a lot of the fish on that bank seem to have been coming from under the rod tips!!.. and I mean UNDER 'em!! If anyone reads this and gets their hands on Heron 9, do NOT ignore the 2 trees, 1 either side of the swim and fish a rod under each It's plenty deep enough a rod length out, 7-9ft and there's a hole under the branches of each that'll do fish from now until mid November!
Attila has been fishing very well for those willing to put in the effort and spod a lump of bait in! Same old, same old on there really, if you feed them, they'll stay around and you can bag up, if you get bored or can't be ar*ed, they'll just swim off n find someone else willing to put on a spread lol! Plenty of low - mid 30's being reported with a handful of 40's too!!
