For those that have used the old Protavit Liver and remember how good it was. I was wondering if anyone had any idea or thought about trying to re-make the iconic bait.
I was thinking of using Pete B's HNV Base and adding:
50g liver powder
20g brocacel yeast
30g Fenugreek
Per 5 eggs:
15ml liquid liver
2 drops fenugreek oleoresin
Don't know if anyone had any thoughts or advice?
I believe the bait had a high sugar content but unsure how to add that in?
It's gonna be fun tinkering while I'm off!!

If you add 1g of Alpha Amylase to Peters mix, you should be able to 'create' the sugars from the carb content, to an extent. Just a thought. Interesting idea yours though, because I've been trying to recreate the 'aroma' of Hutchies original Liver Mix... And the Liver Powder (Beef), Brocacel and Fenugreek in equal combinations seemed to be very similar to the one stored in the dusty recesses of my memory!

Protavit Liver was a very simple base mix. Pretty much liver meal, maize meal, soya meal or flour and semolina, with an added liver flavour.

Tails Up Protovit Liver certainly caught it's fair-share back in the day though. It was always in the papers.
I haven't read his book for a while, but I'm pretty sure JS used to do well on it also.

I think that was it, very simple, but it worked.
A friend of mine worked for Tails Up for a while, he reckoned they had a choice, sling the ingredients into a concrete mixer or roll the finished mix.
It could be worse, apparently they started mixing by putting the ingredients in a bucket, putting the lid on and rolling it round the yard.

I was lucky enough to catch all the known ones other than 2 during the late 90s early 00s on the pro liver from the park. A lot went in but it worked ridiculously well. You get addicted to a flavour/smell hence why I'm trying to recreate it.

While not wishing to denigrate the bait in any way it is plainly a 50/50 bait (of around 40% protein) so would it then be that any 50/50 base mix containing fish meal can be described as an HNV ? This is the Pete B mix as mention in the original post.

I found this on the web about 20 years ago and did very well on it at the time.
The liver boilie mix
This is one of my own mixtures, the result of a lot of field testing. It has proved VERY effective
*10 oz Semolina
*2 oz Soya flour
*4 oz Liver (liquidised)
*1 tbl sp Garlic powder (not salt)
*3 tbl sp Clear honey
*4-6 lge Eggs
*Your own flavour,colour or enhancer
Method
Liquidise the liver in an electric blender. Gently fold in the eggs, garlic powder and honey. You can add colouring, flavouring or enhancers at this point if required. Pour the mixture into a large mixing bowl. Mix the dry ingredients in a seperate bowl and add to the liver mixture a little at a time until you have a stiff paste. Add more egg or semolina to get the right consistancy. Roll the mix into balls and boil for 2-6 minutes (the longer they are boiled, the harder the baits will be).
Lay the baits out on old towels or paper and dry for a least 6 hrs.
I found this on the web about 20 years ago and did very well on it at the time.
