I was always told go pound for pound. Been working for me but then I'm on mono as a braid ban. 60lb mono is not cool when trying to cast with a catfish rod lol

You don't need to go that heavy for anything over here, 60lb is more than ample. Spiderwire is what I used to use for cats but prefer mono tbh

I use 80lb braid for dead baiting for pike. Just some cheapish Chinese stuff but purchased from a uk seller. Actually casts quite well, surprisingly.

No, the theory when dead baiting is the braid should be strong enough to bend the trebles out of a snag. Don't want to leave baited rigs in the water. Plus I had it in the garage after using it for cats so thought why not.

Fair enough matey 👍 I think personally it's maybe a pinch overkill, but I get the logic behind it.
With 80lbs braid straight through I'd be worried about snapping my rods or smashing the reel to pieces when trying to pull the hooks out of a snag! Maybe I'm just being sentimental and couldn't bear the thought of busting up my 20+ year old rods and reels up!

Pulling for a break by wrapping the braid around a towel puts no pressure on the gear. Most pikers use 60lb+ braid on lure rods as a given. I only used 80 as I had a mile of it in the garage. Catches the wind a bit but doesn't half set the hooks well, after using mono for years It's night and day.

It takes a bit to break 12lb mono I can't imagine how much it takes for braid in the breaking strains you're talking about

Hopefully I don't find out, the whole point is to bend the hooks and not snap the braid.

also worth noting that a lot of braids break around half the claimed bs. For tiddenfoot id be wanting 80lb braid - the Saratoga or Shadowstrike seem to get reasonable reviews from the catters and very cheap

On a serious note, when we were kids, good mate of mine was pulling for a break, hooklength snapped but the lead came back and whacked him right in the side of the head. Wasn't a pretty sight and there was blood every where....
Just be careful when pulling for a break, it can be extremely dangerous
