Afternoon all

Inspired by my elderly neighbour who yesterday knocked on MY door to ask if I needed anything....

In these frustrating times I'm going to try and bring some positivity - much like oldgeezer and blankosaurus have done.

So... my positive thought for today is this.

In 2019 air travel contributed 915 million tonnes of carbon emissions. With flights hugely reduced at the moment, that figure will be much less on a daily basis. Coupled with the huge reduction in road traffic, there's a big difference each day

It's not the be all and end all, but a small positive at least.

Promise they won't all be green related! Feel free to add your own.

My local pub is offering to get supplies from a wholesaler for anyone that needs it.
I'm sure I can see more stars tonight as well

We gave an extra round of applause for the bin Men too as one lives on our stretch of the street.

James Dyson has come up with a new design for respirators to be used by the NHS. It's yet to be approved, but given his track record it could be that the new equipment will be even better than existing machines.

Fingers crossed it gets approval quickly and they can get them produced ASAP

My positive thought of the day is getting the rods out for some exercise over the weekend......

Got woke at 4 this morning with dog yelping, My Mrs left her bath robe on bottom of bed and the dog managed to climb down arm with front paws and head out of sleeve and her rear in armpit. How she managed this we don't know but gave me an idea for beef wellington if the food runs out

My positive thought for today...


As kids of all ages are now being home schooled, parents have the opportunity to get a much better grasp of what they are learning and kids can potentially get to see just how clever their parents actually are. I can remember having some geography homework when I was about 13 and my dad wandering past and saying 'oh is that weather and isobars?'.... he then spent a good hour or so working through it with me and I got to see him being an expert about something that I didn't realise he knew.

Let your kids see you being clever - and in return, let them show you how much they know. And if you both don't know the answer and you have the time and means, then try and find it out together.

I'm no mathematician but I did get 5th year advanced C&G so thought I could help my daughter with her homework.
To be honest the question were set in a such a way I couldn't understand what they were asking to me it didn't make mathematical sense.

Fair point though. You need a very good grasp of written English to do well in maths exams these days...

It's an eye opener seeing what the expectation is for year 6 kids to achieve before darting secondary school. Good that more people are getting the chance to see it too.

BBC schools and bitesize have good resources if you get stuck fellas

When texting I'll always spell the correct word as it must surely help the kids.

I'm pretty good with practical maths, mental arithmetic, geometry, I can cut a hipped roof from a few measurements using pythagoras theorem but I can't make head nor tail of my daughters year11 homework.
Her teacher tried to enlighten me on the usefulness of quadratic equations but my word is that the most arse about face way of working
And is there a practical application to learning to expand or simplify equations in algebra, that stuff makes my eyes hurt

I've never had a use for quadratic equations but I did like solving them. You know when you've got the right answer because when you put it back in it all works out.
when S (satisfying)=YES + U (useful)NO= W(waste of time)
In other words I wouldn't waste my time on them nowadays

Indeed, spot on mate.

NHS and McLaren have reverse engineered a piece of existing equipment and come up with a device that gets oxygen to the lungs without need for a ventilator.

If it's approved, mclaren can make 1000 a day which will free up ventilators for the most critical patients.

Maybe moving forward, cutting edge industrial engineers will remember this and continue to give valuable help to the NHS... one can hope eh?

Hi Mal,

I've seen this news and in fact, it's Mercedes who have worked in conjunction with University College London's mechanical engineers and University London Hospital clinicians to adapt and improve an existing breathing aid. It has already been approved by the Medical Association for NHS use and is currently on trial in the ULH. This process has incredibly been made in only 10 days. It's expected to be given the go ahead, then Mercedes can start producing them from next week at a rate of 1000 per day.
This device is non invasive like a full respirator, and forces air/oxygen into a patient's lungs and is for the less critical patients, so leaving the full respirators for the critically ill.
Really good news and great credit to those technicians who worked night and day to produce this life saving device so quickly.

My son was on CPAP for a while as he was premature, I can imagine it will help those having difficulty with lung capacity and inhalation.. it's actually a gently forced oxygen mix that allows normal breathing and no sedation. Not sure if it can operate properly without air escaping as it basically stops the lungs completely deflating, which a healthy lung will do naturally, by keeping enough constant air passing over the mouth/nose to keep lungs partially inflated.. I'd have thought the air in the ward/unit will be full of airborne virus, but must have been accounted for in being re-engineered to meet regs.
It kept my lad alive, so I'm all for it

Gentle breeze for an infant maybe...............

My wife likened it to having her head stuck out of a car window at 40mph ..........after her heart surgery she was on it every other hour for 4/5 days.

A fishing buddy has a portable unit ( for sleep apnea ) .......the noise it makes is deafening if not sealed to his face properly.............

It will give him half a chance if the worst comes to the worst.

Having read some info, it seems that CPAP devices are mainly used for people with sleep apnea and that some patients find them difficult to get used to. So, your wife having had it applied hour on hour off, seems odd and not user friendly.
It seems they are also used for patients that can use their lungs to breathe, but are not getting enough oxygen, like with asthma and COPD. Obviously they are being made to help combat the virus pandemic, because the NHS doesn't have that many of them. I have COPD and in the high risk category, so am pleased they are due to be massed produced and in my case, for future reference. It's interesting that mobile devices are also available for use at home and, perhaps, as you said, even when fishing.

I'd have thought every hospital with maternity facilities has them too, or at least paediatric special care units.
Probably priced beyond the means of some trusts, like most things to do with healthcare. It's almost time to put the old cash cow out to pasture and actually invest in care

I think the proper respiratory units probably cost many £1000s because they are large, sophisticated pieces of kit, but the new CPAP units, I saw on the TV news, are small, and look less complicated devices, which I would hazard a guess will cost in the £100s, and probably be considered cost effective.
Given the conversion of buildings into Nightingale hospitals and the return of 20000 retired doctors and nurses etc. it seems the government isn't much focused on cost restraint.

Knowing what I'm paid to, for example, hang the doors you get to a ward; those CPAP machines would not ordinarily be in the 100s.. no chance
I imagine the government will monitor profits. Depends what retooling and material costs are I suppose.
I did some work in a building that made mclaren parts and the whole operation was mind blowing!

As much as the incredible force the machine was putting out , it was the actual 'tight fit' of the mask she struggled with.

As for my fishing buddy , he has a face like Jaques Cousteau in the morning , the red ring around his face takes about an hour to disappear

The bag it comes with is not much bigger than a large camera bag , but we have to use venues where he can have an extension lead to his bivvy......

Got my email confirmation that I've been signed up to be a nhs helper.

The map around me shows that I'm far from the only one who's done it too

Hopefully we will be over this soon

Well done Mal. In the school where my missus is a teaching assistant the majority of teachers are doing **** all and leaving it all to the TA's to set and oversea the homework.
Pity they don't take a leaf out of your book.
During the Easter break teachers will be offered extra money on top of the wages to go in but as the pay isn't much the take up isn't expected to be high. TA's are more likely to go in as they don't get paid for holidays.

I learned very early on in my teaching that you look after your TA's and your site staff as they are invaluable and when school cuts hit, often the first areas to be squeezed.

Just heard from my mate who is a big Southampton supporter.

Her dad is a lifelong fan. He just had a phone call from Saints defender Jack Stephens asking if he was ok and if he needed anything. They are calling round all the pensioner season ticket holders and left a number for him to call back if he needs any help.

My wife is a headteacher , and is working closely with her Academy chain to explore all fair avenues to everybody in this unprecedented period.
Her school has a rota of the senior leadership team in school every day as is a legal requirement , alongside a skeleton staff of T.A's and teachers.
She is having web seminars with whoever is in school each day , as well as with her cluster group within the Academy.
Plans are in place where parent mail is used to keep everybody informed , as well as continuing to offer some sort of education to those children not in. They cannot follow the curriculum at this time , and when the stats fall off the end of the world in 6 months time , no doubt OFSTED will be round with their hatchets out baying for blood.
She currently has a potential of 62 children eligible to attend ( which took an awful lot of time and effort to sort out initially ) and where so far there has been between 2 and 11 children actually attending. They have in place now a scheme where the vouchers for free school meals are being sent out directly to parents.

In her school , anybody who volunteers or is on the rota to cover the Easter holidays will be given lieu holiday to take after Easter , teachers will not receive extra money.

I guess there are Headteachers and then there are Headteachers.....................

I won't go into details but yesterday my missus got involved with something concerning a child. It wasn't until it was over she had the time to think how the **** did a TA get involved with that!

8.00 pm tonight - clap for the NHS again

1st day out of bed😀 in six days, had extreme fatigue, intermittent hot sweats and occasional coughs! But nothing major apart from exhaustion. Sometimes even reading forum was exhausting!

Was it flu or CV provably never know but only got out to use toilet, couldn't be arsed to wash or change t shirt and shorts I was minging.

The positives today was leaving the spare room, having a long shower and throwing t shirt and shorts and bedding on boil wash 😀 still quite tired but had time to focus on what I have taken for granted my wife, my health and how lucky we both are in regards to our home life.

So remember to put time aside for conversation and actually listening to each other rather than vegging in front of tele with occasional nod or murmour 👍🏻

Hi all,

Heartwarming story in the Eastern daily press today.
A Norfolk ambulance paramedic after a tough night shift, still in uniform, joined a long queue at Lidl in Cromer to buy some shopping. Each member of the queue one after another gave him their place until he was next in line at the front and spontaneously gave him a round of applause.
Having got his shopping and at the checkout, a lady, who had chatted to him in the queue, rushed to the till and swiped her card to pay his bill. He tried to object, but the lady gave him a big smile and said it's too late now.
The paramedic told the press he was touched and humbled by the appreciation he was shown and said he was incredibly proud to wear the uniform and do the job with his profession colleagues.

Nah, the hospitals will be ok.

You'll have to work until you're 85, every school will have 50 kids in a class and they'll bring back workhouses, but the hospitals will be ok.

My positive thought for today is a brief phrase that Matt Hancock said yesterday, with reference to all the health professionals under his brief, at his daily update report on TV to the press.
It resonated with me, because I've been in hospital a couple of times, once for several weeks and had many dealings and visits to hospitals, when my wife was a patient many times. Also, my daughter is a hospital staff nurse.
So, what was is that Matt Hancock said re his NHS staff?

They just said on BBC TV that the Nightingale hospital was constructed by an army of civilian tradesmen with help from the military. They didn't say who managed and oversaw the operation, but probably an amalgam of the NHS, the military and construction specialists.
As you say, it was a great job by all involved to complete it in 10 days.
That follows the great job of Mercedes, the University College London and UCLH, in making the new CPAP breathing aid and having it approved for NHS use, also in about 10 days.
Also, of great merit was the return of 25000 retired NHS staff to the front line and the 750000 volunteers who have signed up to help out where needed.
Given the division and confrontation in our country over the last 3 years, and having our competence and determination questioned, it's welcome to see the evidence of our country's historical spirit, and expertise.

I'd like to think after this global disaster there'd be some kind of body/organisation set up to globally handle this type of thing faster and more efficiently next time. Sign up, nominate a team from each member, that can travel freely and with advice heeded in any outbreak if anything is spotted on the radar. Fully funded with regular conferences. It's not good to let countries fight stuff like this independently as we've seen. We have to find better ways to globally handle situations like this cause the odds are there'll be another from somewhere in the future. Mixed measures by independent government's have helped to spread this.

They've just started antibody testing here in Italy.

In a random sample of 60 people in one of the original hotspots, 40 had anitbodies despite never showing any symptoms. Early days, but if so many people are asymptomatic it'd be great. It would also explain how fast this thing has spread.

No vaccine will arrive fast. They have to test to make sure it's 100% safe, thanks to the cretinous antivaxers who would jump on any risk, however tiny, in order to try to discredit the whole concept of vaccination.

I was led to believe that we were already in possession of the 3.5 million antibody kits and they were currently being tested by our experts. If not, then we seem to have at least, a sample that we are testing.

But yesterday the Department of Health and Social Care was forced to admit the Government had not yet bought any kits due to hold-ups related to testing."

The government apparently agreed in principle to buy these and paid? Like I said, confusion.

Most teenage lads already own such a device however it's not perfect.

Called simply the 'hoodie' it creates a minimum distance of 2m from the wearer. However at present it only seems to work on a percentage of the population - the elderly, young families, people in unfamiliar towns and cities. Other teenage young men seem immune to it apart from a strange side effect that makes them mimic the wearer....

It's only fair to give credit where it's due, but drugs gangs under truce, distributing food to the needy for purely compassionate, humanitarian reasons, takes a bit of believing, given the brutality that drug gangs are known for.
However, if it's not just a publicly stunt and major food distribution is taking place, then I'm sure the recipients are grateful. It's ironic that they are well placed to do so, given their comprehensive distribution networks. A cynic might suggest that they are looking to keep their customers healthy for future business and keeping their runners busy during the downturn.

Yep one good thing to come out of all this , i have the time to cook , trying lots of soups , my favorite from the last week was carrot , then leek !

Always been a bird lover , Squirrels have an impact on our small bird population , the number of tit boxes i have made that have had the openings enlarged so a squirrel can get it's head in ,just replaced last years with a new one , i also watched a squirrel destroy a robins nest in our garden a few years back killing the contents !

An invasive none native species that i think we could do without , i must of dispatched around 2 - 3000 since i was 19

I've watched quite a bit of US politics before and since Trump won the presidency and you may not be so aware of the hostile partianship and division that exists between the Republican White house and the Democrats and the mostly, attack dog, left wing media. Firstly, when Hillary Clinton via the Democratic National Committee, paid $7 million through a research firm
Fusion GPS to Chris Steel, an ex MI6 agent, who had Russian connections, to try and dig up evidence of Trump Russian collusion in the election. That led to the Mueller investigation, which went on for 18 months or more and found nothing. So the Democrats, who controlled the House, then set in motion the recent impeachment process, which was also found to be groundless.
There is little honour and respect shown in US cross party politics as shown by Nancy Pilosi, the leading House Democrat, who at Trump's State of the Union address, stood behind him and looking at the TV cameras, proceeded to tear up into pieces, her copy of the speech.

But not meaning to demean this gesture but if they are being housed surely there must be landlines at these premises to be used. It is just giving them an asset that will be bartered, sold or stolen. Having dealt with the homeless many have drug, alcohol issues and a lot of them don't want contact with families, friends or companions.

How did they survive/live before CV and why didn't she promote this then. These will be basic phones with a £10 card probably so big headlines showing she cares for an outlay of possibly £1000 but its probably still more than the Bransons and Ashleys of this world!

Just to report that Tom Moore has just done his 100 laps with a guard of honour from the Yorkshire regiment, his old county. As I write, the donations have just passed, wait for it.......£12.3 million. Incredible and the money keeps pouring in.

Just an update on my cousins Dad, he FaceTimed him yesterday and said he looked **** but better than he thought he would

for those that don't read this topic he is a cancer sufferer given a year to go and was taken into hospital 2 weeks ago. They stabilised some internal bleeding and discovered he had CV. He spent days in ICU and signed up for some drug tests, he had the priest do his thing and 2 days later was vastly improved. He will be 7 days free of symptoms tomorrow and has tested negative.

he is getting radiotherapy treatment tomorrow to alleviate his cancer and then sent home next week with carers in place to assist him. This treatment was not expected but they have capacity to carry this additional treatment out.

So thank you to all the staff of the NHS

Just a note, things like this I am posting isn't necessarily my point of view, quite the contrary but it's good to see how people are so easy to over react and present there view as FACT when really it's as crazy as the statement I posted!

All This aside.......here's my positive thought of the day.........It's sunny and the lake looks stunning......

I seem be the focus of bad news if you read this thread in relation to illness but some updates

Cousins dad has now had his second radiography treatment nd he and his results appear positive.

My Mrs had a scale lump on her shoulder where a mole was and it appeared to disappear but this patch of dry scaley skin formed. Went to DR's just before lockdown he did a biopsy and sent it off. Result 4 days later its Bowens disease, a mild form of skin cancer he said he would recommend her for treatment on a tuesday, the first Tuesday of shut down.. On thursday Dermatology department contacted her can she come in for assessment, was expecting a couple of months for appointment, no it was on friday. They did assessment on friday and we would hear in future for a possible date to discuss treatment. Expected a long wait. letter arrived on tuesday can you come in sunday to have it removed. Went in Sunday and had a local anaesthetic and it was removed, stitched up and it would be sent away for tests. now 10 days later its come back as a pre cancerous lesion and benign so no further treatment required. So start to finish in less than 5 weeks the NHS should be proud of itself and although what you read the NHS was never closed for anything except CV related treatment.

And a mate had a CV test and negative test result back in 36 hours.

So another big thanks to the NHS

thanks for asking mate - spoke to her earlier. she's feeling much the same - which i guess is a positive as she's not feeling worse.... no word back yet on her test result.

The other reason is he doesn't do Labour, I'd find him more funnier if he done everyone a bit like they did on Spitting Image.
Anyway must keep things positive...since lockdown my daughter has been living in her flat alone and it's doing her head in so she's coming back to our house for a few weeks. We've checked distancing rules and as long as there's no back and forwards this is allowed.

If she's been in and not in contact with anyone and you are the same I can't see a problem with it, as technically your both self isolating and should be free of CV. I would keep a bit of space between you all for a week all should be good.

That's what this country needs is a big injection of common sense I was in supermarket this morning waiting a safe distance form a slow elderly shopper and I could feel the woman behind me inching closer So much so was kicking her basket along and it hit the back of my leg. I turned around and she was listening to someone on her mobile, I gave the Paddington bear stare and get out of my space look. Totally ignored me carrying on chatting so I kicked her basket back at her. She suddenly realised what she had done and apologised and backed up a bit. Hopefully she learned from this but I don't think so!

So have I just invented basket rage 😷😷😷

The ongoing recession is turning out to be the steepest in living memory ... no surprise there! However. the markets are forward-looking so asset prices reflect future developments before they show up in the data. We need to think about things that are not yet materialising and begin to position for them before they do. This means thinking about a U-shaped economic path as we transition.This will be faster where liquidity is the main challenge and slower where solvency is the problem. All in all, pretty positive long term but there is more short term pain to be suffered yet.

Looks like there are plans in place to get some kids back to school early June

The Y10 and Y12 cohorts have really suffered with the closures as they would usually be right in the thick of their exam syllabus learning so if we can safely get them back in some shape asap it would be a big win

Just got a message to say the lake I've been fishing for the last year is re-opening tomorrow.
And 6 months ago I booked one of the best swims for 5 days from this Saturday.
Whey-hey .. I can go fishing again!

As per the past posts abou cousins dad

Well he went home Monday, internal bleeding sorted and having survived CV and the priest. He seems well enough after 2 radiotherapy sessions and awaits results from that. He was meant to go home Friday but because he was in hospital they gave him another CV test which was positive so kept him in over weekend. No signs and symptoms tested him again Monday and negative 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️ Either a false positive Friday or as in singapore it's detecting dead cells?

He was so well Tuesday he wanted to do some food shopping but this was all arranged and a volunteer got it for him👍🏻 So all good news,


So from deaths door to wanting to pop to supermarket 😷😷😷

she felt better yesterday but has gone downhill again today - apparently that's true for a lot of people with it.

she's suffering a lot with dizzyness along with the breathing issues. I said she was dizzy to start with but ....

keeping a remote eye on her and reminding her of that 111 number

Don't know if I had CV or something else, mine came in waves, ups and downs. Still 5 weeks after I have a couple of good days and then a bad one.

As long as the downs don't get worse its bearable but keep pushing the 111 reminders.

Been at it a few years now , i have a bucket full of crappy coins from roman grots early Victorian to modern day coins only just worth their scrap value , except for a few of the modern ones , my roman coins are interesting and a few of the early short cross coins ,king John and Richard the lion heart , still not found a gold coin ! then again , iv'e still not caught a 40 lb river carp , maybe this year is the year !

14 day quarantine being brought in for people who arrive in UK ...

I mean that horse bolted some time ago, but at least it's small progress...

Thats good news, but warn her about to much to soon, she will still have some down days but not as bad as it was but positive attitude can work wonders and some sun

Update from cousins dad he has just done his first outdoor walk since coming out of hospital and asked him if he can meet him at a local canal for a catch up and do some fishing

On that subject I use Flipper, you pay them £25 a year and they constantly monitor your fuel usage and 'flip' you onto a cheaper supplier whenever one comes up, easily worth the 25 quid

I've used MSE to change suppliers a couple of times, been with Pure planet since November as they were the cheapest I've had no problems with them except now MSE says I can save £240 by switching again which is 20% a year.
That sounds too good to be true, I could switch without penalties but what's the betting they'll find someone else cheaper in a month or two

Chuffy do you need a smartmeter for Flipper. I'm holding out until they've 100% sorted the problems
