So I've spent most of the year chasing barbel, and to be honest between the Yorkshire Derwent, Wharfe, Ouse and a guest trip on the Trent, I've had a great year, upping my PB on the Trent to 12lb 14oz as I've gone.
I'd not caught a Yorkshire double until a few weeks ago when a beautiful 10lb 10oz whisker visited me on the Ouse. A splendid fish that was!
This weekend I decided to try the Ouse again, I'd not cast a barbel rod for a couple of weeks, and two weeks before that I'd fished the river over a couple of short evenings with 12 foot extra in, needless to say it was hard work and didn't produce.
This weekend it was back to about 6 foot above nsl and I thought I'd try again. Saturday I fished 2.30pm til about 6.30pm. First two hours were quiet when suddenly one of the rods burst into life, a lovely 6lb fish landed. In the next hour I had two more - one a similar size and then another smaller but perfect fish. 3 fish when expecting none was a great result!
Inspired by Saturdays success, I returned yesterday and took my lad to get him out of the house. Was later when we arrived, about 5pm so we didn't have ages to fish. After an hour and with no indications, my lad informed me "we're not going to catch anything Dad, I can feel it"
So I was relieved that almost immediately after he'd said that a chub obliged on one of the rods. At this point I was happy to have caught something for him to see, hold, and have his picture taken with.
It wasn't until half an hour later and me thinking that bertie wasn't going to visit, that I had a positive take on one of the rods. My son's stood there immediately behind me with landing net in hand asking if it's a big one, I said I don't know! Then it took off...
A few big runs taking line at ease and heart stopping moments later, the fish surfaced in front of me and I said "it's a big one!". It slapped on the surface as I drew it over the net and at that point I knew this was a big, big fish.
Back up on the bank and with weighing/camera stuff at the ready, we lay the fish down and had a first proper look. And bloody hell it was a good one, 13lb 2oz
The exisiting Yorkshire Ouse record stands at 12lb 11oz to put it into context. What a moment, and what a fish. Shared with someone closest to me. You can't ask for more...

I took my lad fishing once and the very first bite he had turned out to be a 15lb mirror, it took me ages to get one that size when I started so was very happy for him. I said pick it up then, lets get some pictures to show your mum,

Brilliant post mate. Great fish and a great story. I still re-tell some of the magical days I had on the bank and the shore with my dad.
Congratulations on a superb catch that should be gracing the pages of anglers mail etc.
The real prize is doing it with your lad though.

Thanks all, that Ouse biggie is still the last barbel I've caught, despite trying a few times since!
I did have a tot up of barbel caught this year (since June), my first 'full' season trying for them. 107 landed I think, with quite a few lost as well.
I'll keep trying odd times through winter where weather and levels allow
