So - I need some help please - as despite being experienced and 50 years of fishing I have a club water that has weed and some fish I'd like to catch, it also has some strict rules that are enforced to the letter, fair enough. So whilst I know what I deem is safe it can often differ to rules so wanted to present a situation and ask for absolutely categorical best practice - please;

The rules
500 mm of tubing
No leaders of any kind
No fixed leads

Preferably I want to fish a naked chod, but I can't. I could use a chod with 500mm of tubing and a top bead, however people have different tolerances regards how easy the top bead comes away, also the 'fixed lead' rule, happy to use a heli-safe but not a huge fan as I think they can cause more 'problems' than they solve regards a tether between the top of the heli-safe and the bead.

So what wonder set ups can you think of that will ensure on Rig Check that all is in order. I always use barbless hooks, even in weed as believe anything with a barbless has a good chance no matter what - but these are banned too!

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure the club considers helicopter set ups as a fixed lead. I would double check, as it seems strange.

Agreed, if the top bead is set to come off, as you would expect with any chod rig, the risk of towing a lead is minimal

No I don't think the club do matey, depending on the ease of the top bead and I find the tubing ones a bit hit and miss. Too loose and they fly back on cast, too tight and officious bailiff kicks me off. So are you saying no help safe and check / pva top bead?

If it doesn't stipulate in the rules chod rigs are banned. Then surely your OK to use them. I'm sure the 50cm of tubing rule is for semi fixed or running lead set ups. I'd ask for a bit of clarification on that one seems a bit vague.

I'm guessing the tubing is for fish safety - lifting scales etc?

have you ever looked at stretching the tubing out to make it thinner? I used to do it once threaded on the line with the weighted ones being the best. I used to place the tubing / line in a cup of hot water to soften it up & then pulled it out to stretch it - once stretched it would be very thin & a lot more supple so I would imagine it would suit a chod rig / swivel a lot better.

good luck

If you are concerned about heli rig safety; check out research by the Tenchfishers on the subject. Available on YouTube and their website.

They have tested most commercially available ‘heli kits' and some are very questionable. Some are good.

Their preferred option is now a set up including ‘hellerman' tubing.

As far as the definition of a ‘fixed' lead is concerned; match anglers think a heli rig IS a fixed lead. So if it is a match based club the rules will probably reflect that.

I use rig tubing with my heli set up and use the Gardner covert safety beads their a tapered bore bead as the top bead on the tubing it grips it enough
Are you sure?
