Afternoon all,

on my club water, which has lots of holes and bars in it, i normally fish a 7inch hook link on my noodle rigs.

Measuring from eye of the hook, down to the end of the loop i connect to my quick change.

When deciding on the length of a stiff hinge, what would you be measuring to?
1. eye of the hook to the loop
2. hinge swivel to the loop

The stiff hinge im thinking on trying will be about 2 inches in height from the hinge on a running setup (may switch to a heli if running tangles too much)

Just experiment yourself. Best way to learn.

Tie up a rig on the lower end of your measurements, and one at the higher end and look at them in the edge, and if you are happy with them, cast out and see what the feeding fish think.

Remember - Sometimes we massively over complicate things, and a simple knotless knot out scores everything

yeah this is what i was going to do, just wondered if wiser anglers had some thoughts on this.

I know simple & effective rigs are tried and true, that is far away from most of the rigs i use however XD

You will get a range of answers from “I prefer short to I prefer long” and some might tell you they like a mid length

Personally I just make a rig up and dont even measure but I'm not fussy

Surely, it has to depend on what you are fishing over, and to a degree , the size of the fish you are expecting to catch.

Agree. Where you measure from is completely insignificant. The boom should be constructed to suit the spot.

I vary the length of the boom depending on the swim and stock I am fishing for. Loosely speaking, I tend to use a slightly longer boom if weedy or not an overly clean bottom and if it is fairly clean will use slightly shorter. Typically between 6 and 9 inches but have used shorter and longer when needed. So, just backing up some other answers, there isn't a right or wrong it depends on the situation

If its a running rig, then it makes no difference to hooking mechanics. Therefore I usually fish stiff 25lb boom over whatever I fish at least 12 inches and a slightly trimmed down nash xl tangle sleeve. . Never tangles although not sure it's the best for casting mega distances compared to other lead setups.

+1, and personally fish size wouldn't bother me. If you have a lot of uneven sized gravel the longer the boom the more likely it is to be sitting up off the bottom, if that bothers you.
Are you sure?
