Is there a risk that when the braided loop pulls tight up to the hook eye that the side of the eye with the gap can damage the line? Am I just being overly paranoid?

Yes you are being paranoid. I've been using the multi rig for many years with no issues at all

Early drawings of the multi show a second rig ring in position to prevent this happening but it's safe to use without it. You won't get any line damage.

In nearly 20 years of using this rig, I've never tried it with a bottom bait for some reason always thought and was told that the mechanics wouldn't work with a heavy bait.
Might just give that a try next time I'm out 👍

I've been including a loop at the hook end of virtually all of my rigs for the last few years to enable quick change hooks & not had any issued with the eye part damaging braid / mono / chod link.
I actually like the idea as I think it helps having a doubled up, thick section as I don't seem to get as much mouth damage from braid cutting into it during the fight.
I have a couple of hook links that have had dozens & dozens of fish on them & I would still use them again.
