Why not just use a Pallatrax (or whoever) stone if you want to try and make something look like a stone, with the added advantage of it also having no lead in it!

Carp Rock

🤦🏻‍♀️

Think it's just the density of stones. 4oz would be half a house brick

I think someone is giving carp way too much credit

4oz Stone is about the same size as a “naked” fox method feeder.

I reckon he's just trying to find a market for a knackered lead mould 😂

Blooming things!
Not particularly good for distance casting. I only use them when I can underarm or lower the bait in.

Agreed, think of the all the different shapes, sizes and colours leads come in, carp aren't that clever.

Yet “everyone” buys camo leads?

Never heard of those cement leads, that sounds even weirder - trying to make a stone, rather than just using one 🤔 Do they do a range of different renders?

Only because that's what they sell.
I've always thought the reason for coating leads was to stop them getting roughed up on gravel, that's the reason I went on them, they used to come in single colours, then after a while they started to mix colours to 'camo' them up

@clobersaurus.
Especially when people fish tight to well known features.

Years ago I bought a load of 2oz leads and made them up to 3oz with multifinish/plaster scraps, they really did look like pieces of gravel and stone when on the lakebed.

I think someone on here queried about the possibility of having sharp edges, and possibly scratching carp, so I 'binned' them.

That's a proper render job.

As Tinhead says, I'm sure leads were originally coated to prevent scratching or damaging the lead, camouflage was just an incidental.
Even with coating, I've had the coating split on impact with the lakebed. They can sometimes be 'repaired' with a lighter melting and rejoining the plastic, but if its too bad I just take the plastic coating off, and either use them uncoated or repaint and use a tough varnish.

Using coated leads on “proper” gravel pits back in the day was pointless as they were chewed up worse than the lead was. As the years have gone by and the bars collapsed/silted over they've got less severe. We used to cars 4oz out and get 2 1/2 back!

Some coated leads seem to be more resilient to gravel bars than others. I've had some split on the first cast. Korda and fox ones seem a bit better than some I've bought from sellers on the Internet. To be honest I'm not sure it really matters. Possibly in gin clear water on a shiny gravel bar. Most of the time the lead is at least partly obscured by the bottom of the lake.
