They all work mate. Slip D , German rig and so on. Aslong as you set them up correct they'll all catch you fish it's just a confidence thing.

agree with tranter mate , they all work its just down to confidence . start with the german rig for simplicity and see how you go. have had many good result on the german with semi stiff braid and a big mugga hook and a little mesh bag. so simple but very effective.

Is the German rig just bottom baits and wafters?

Does anyone fish pop ups on them and if so how do you counter balance them.

That's basically a Ronnie rig.

Absolutely,

One of my favourite rigs, super simple - and balances perfectly with a mugga + wafter, or slow-sinking plastic corn.

Nothing like a ronnie

A German rig is just a hook knotless knotted to fluro or a semi stiff braid with a micro swivel and hookbead on the shank

Re pop ups, it wont work as it is but put a break in the hooklink like you might with a multi rig and it will work fine. Putty with a bit of wire to hold it on or a split shot to balance it

So isn't that a Ronnie rig with just a quick change swivel added in ? Put a break in the material and a sinker of some sort it's like a Ronnie.

I wouldn't use it like that personally but it's very similar but not what it was designed for.

I use amnesia for my boom on ronnie rigs, so unlike a coated braid it's not an easy tweak to strip a bit out to make a hinge.

Do any of you still add a tungsten counter weight on your German rig to aid hooking/prevent ejection.
I have used ronnies with the tungsten on for bottom baits and its done OK, but fancy trying a German to see if it will work any better.

Yes mate i think a big bit of tungsten putty around 1inch up from the hook eye is key to getting them nailed.

i use esp semi stiff , size 4 mugga and always a wafter bait with it , small mesh bag of micro pellet or crumb.

Likewise, I use a shot one inch from the hook, size 4 Mugga and a wafter. Can't remember the last time I lost a fish, always nailed. 👍

I tend to use a D-rig for pop-ups and snowman baits.

If using a pop-up on coated braid, match anglers olivettes make a perfect counterbalance, and don't come with carp tax. If you have a short hooklink section as on a hinged stiff rig, then balance it to the mini swivel with putty.

To be honest, any rig can be balanced for wafters, pop-ups, but much of it is rig fashion.

This is my personal view, but a Ronnie rig works best with a pop-up whereas a D-rig is more suitable for bottom baits, balanced baits and pop-ups.

You could just as easily use a blowback rig with a ring on the shank, or even just a standard sliding ring, (which I was doing years before it was renamed German rig, and was called the Sliding rig in Rob Maylins book Carp back around 1990).
Are you sure?
