Hi Chaps,
Fishing a Ronnie over gravel - what are peoples findings on fishing with a pop up v's a wafter or even a bottom bait out the bag?
Fishing a pop up on a Ronnie - does using a larger hook bait (18mm) get in the way and affect hooking potential?
Finally, what are your thoughts on stiff hook link like boom vs something a bit more supple like ESP tungsten loaded material.
Just interested to see others thoughts on this.
Thanks for any replies.

On gravel with a Ronnie I would fish with a bottom bait tipped with pop-up fake corn - done well like this in the past. Used semi-stiff coated braid 25-35lb, would be more confident with a 15mm or smaller bait.
Why fish a Ronnie on gravel? Krays? Hair rig with a kicker would be fine.

Why fish a Ronnie on gravel?
There is so much silk weed dotted about you just never know if your presented.
Feel a bit more confident with a slow sinking Ronnie on a helicopter.

Rig resets if there's disturbance around it, stops the hook point being burred over on rough gravel from said disturbance.
Plenty off good reasons to use one.
My personal opinion is that low lying pop ups like a Ronnie are so close to the bottom anyway that the fish most likely can't tell much difference between it and a bottom bait. I feel a lot more confident leaving a rig out for a long period knowing its fishing and the hook point is likely good to go still.
Each to their own though

The lake was full of Crays, took the hair getting tangled out of the equation and always tipped with cake corn so if the boilie gets eaten always still fishing with the corn.

I've fished 18mms on a #2 and #4 and hooked just fine, though for some subconscious reason I started to be careful not to overload with putty on 18mm's. I couldn't care less about the "vs" part. Not a fisherman for tying 100 different types of rigs. Ronnie always works fine for me. Maybe my advantage is having a boat. Kind of eliminates al the "what ifs" mentioned below. I drop my bait using an aquascope and am always 100% certain where and how its placed.
