I have used both a regular D rig and a slip D rig, it seems recently most people only mention the slip D - is it better?

What's your preference?

Different rigs for different purposes IMO.

D rig is typically used for stiff rigs - suitable to balanced / wafter type hookbaits typically.

The slip D can be used for any typical bottom bait and is usually tied with a stripped section on coated braid.

I'd also add that there isn't really a best or better when it comes to rigs. find what works for you and your angling situation - that's the best one.

Not long came back from France and had the majority of the fish I caught on D rigs incorporating wafters.
Excellent hook holds too
