Hi all i'm after a bit of advice this maybe a stupid question .. I am using 12lb line on 3.25 torrix and ci4 ultergas in 10000 size .. and have started fishing a bigger water needing to cast about 120 yds with a 3 or 3,5 oz lead. which is pushing it with confidence risking crack offs. I've been advised to add a leader and have chosen 30lb arma kord .. so mainline to braid I've tied an Albright knot seems very small and a good knot all seems good up to here.... my stupid question how much leader onto the reel is it measured by turns of the handle or putting wraps around the spool by hand plus then half a rod length or measure off a length of leader ... thanks in advance.... so putting it simple roughly how many feet on the spool please....oh and it's coming home ;-)

4 turns on the reel. Then the length of the rod plus your drop say another 6 or 7 ft.

Ten metres is easy to remember does the job on rods up to 13ft. Good choice of knot for joining braid and mono. Good luck.

interesting.... I just did 5 turns of the reel and added on to middle section on my 12ft rod ... marked it and measured it off and it was very close to 10 meters so i guess that will be perfect.. i'm going to keep it 5 turns then I've a little to play with when changing rigs and tying knots etc .... cheers guys i'm going to take it over now have some chucks with just a couple of leads before I fish with it .. and get distance sticks out...

before i went I've just tested the knot... by hand as hard as I could it didn't give however I have just put a loop around a fixed object and given the joint some wellie and it has pulled apart but not snapping the line the knot actually giving definitely under more stress than any fish i might catch but had i been in thick weed or a snag its now worried me leaving 10 meters of leader is a bad thing i know this can happen but i'm now going to find another knot or keep tying and testing ... should i be able to get a knot to be stronger than the 12lb line or will the knot always give 1st

Always used six fathoms!

Which way are you tying the knot? Are you whipping the line around the braid or vice versa?

I understood whip round the thickest in this case braid around mono ,,, have changed to the carrot knot and thats held perfectly ... may have tied the other slightly wrong ( small margins) but this has held great and slightly tapered ..just off to fish with it see what happens ..

If you're casting a maximum of 120 yards, then, why are you using a shock leader?
Just use 0.35mm monofilament straight through. It's more than strong enough. If you want to be overly cautious, use 0.38mm.
As for a shock leader knot, mono to braid, the mahin leader knot, or the double grinner is a bit easier to tie.

The Allbright knot has never let me down using a braid leader to mono. I use a length of the rod plus the casting drop, plus 5 turns of the bail arm around the spool

Ive ditched the idea and gone for re spooling with fox exocet 15lb with built in leader ...casts great and no joins ... and its given me complete confidence the mainline diameter is really good as well..

Good decision. Tapered mainlinesare the way to go. Been banging on about them for a while. Good luck with it.
