I know that the standard advice for solid bag fishing in weed is an in line lead fished drop off style.
Are lead clips and runnings rigs really that much less effective at hooking?

I don't think anybody really knows tbh mate.
For most anglers a pva bag is just easier to set up with an in-line lead. But, I know quite a few lads who just use a short rig on a lead clip.
Just do what's easiest for you mate

No, they are just a bit more messy and more likely to tangle in a bag
Only thing i would say is that i use 4oz leads, i fish them on stems so dont drop them and havent lost a fish on that set up for as long as i can remember
There is very rarely the need to drop a lead (unless of course you are a tackle company that sells leads in which case you need to drop them, every time)

I rarely have any problems with tournament shaped inline leads jamming up in weed, and have not found the need to drop the lead on every take, even with semi-fixed pendant setups. Much of this is a tackle manufacturer myth, to convince you to buy more leads from them.
My pva bag set-up is a braided hooklink, and the bag tied off (lick and stick) on the mainline above the lead, so everything is inside it.
Hook goes in bag, chops and pellets, hooklink on top, more chops and pellets, then lead, away from hooklink, filled up to top leaving enough space for tying off.
You will find a bag loader is useful to hold the bag open, and then slide the hooklink through the slit in the side.

Nick, i too have used the korda skyliner inline lead for bags, pulls through weed very easily and i find compacts into a small bag better than a std flat pear.
i have also used lead clips for bags - saves changing set-ups as fish naked anyway
