Using a Heli Safe with stick mix/small bag (8 posts / 4,161 views)

(This could be a long one lol)

So, more recently I have moved over from a standard lead clip set up to a Korda Heli Safe. Mainly because the weed in my lake has increased slightly and I want the confidence of a nicely presented rig.

I have always been a massive fan of using a small pva stick on my german rigs. I feel this not only gives added attraction round the hookbait, but it also helps eliminate tangles and presents the hooklink nicely.

What I would like to know is, if the small stick would be detrimental to the idea of the heli safe?

The idea of the of the hooklink travelling up the line away from the lead and the silt is something I want to happen. Does using a pva stick nicked on the hook stop this from happening enough to get a better presentation via the heli system?

I have toyed around with this slightly. Inserting 2 pva nuggets into the pva (after compressing the stick) and then tying it off. The hook then goes into the two nuggets in the hope that once the pva melts, the nuggets lift the hooklink off the bottom and then the balanced baits slowly sink back on top of the silt/debris. In my mind that should work but I would love to hear ideas from anybody else doing similiar.

I hope I have explained this clearly enough to receive the answers needed.

Cheers for your time in advance and sorry for the long winded post

I would think the thing most likely to happen is the drag on the bag will pop off your top bead. Assuming of course it is set to release correctly should a problem occur.

Yeah on the cast your bag may trigger the helisafe, if that doesnt happen your bag might dislodge the top bead during the cast.

Stick your lead clip back on and use a longer hooklink made of supple braid is what id do.

This certainly does happen in my experience using PVA sticks with helisafes. My solution is to tightly pinch a PVA nugget an inch or so below the bead, which seems to be effective in preventing the bead being discharged by the additional drag on the boom.

When using critically-balanced hookbaits, I also pinch a piece of PVA foam around the hook once the PVA stick has been passed onto the hook. The PVA mesh dissolves a lot faster than the nugget, resulting in your hookbait being able to settle over any debris once the PVA nugget has dissolved. Hope this helps

Ive tested this in the bath multiple times over the years and ive always found the nugget to float the mesh bag far longer than it takes the mesh to dissolve, this just results in a spread of feed and your hook bait landing on top of the lead if not balanced.

After a bit of fiddling I marked my pva tube so I know how much to fill and put 1/4 of a foam nugget in the bag that is the size of £2 coin, this all settles nice and gently.

Good point - forgot to add that I halve my foam nuggets for exactly this reason. Also means your nuggets go further

Pva tape the top bead in place. Job done 👍🏼
