Good evening!

I've recently started fishing a small lake with a clay bottom which is 6-8ft deep and I'm unsure how to approach it rig and bait wise.

I've been using an 2.5oz inline pear lead which is plugging in the clay and takes a bit of pulling to 'pop' it out before reeling in. Hooklink is around 8 inches.

Is the inline pear lead ok or would you recommend another way to go?

Also I'm unsure if I'm using the correct length rig, could you point me in the right direction regarding this?

Which works best over clay - bottom bait, pop up or wafter?

Thanks!!

Put some foam on the hook and pull the lead out as soon as it lands just move it enough to straighten the rig out don't move it off the baited area.

heli set up, fish the bead 6 inches up the leader so it can settle.

wouldn't worry about the lead plugging in the clay, id look at it that it only aids in hooking the fish as its added resistance to move the lead.

PVA foam on the hook just to be sure, slip D with a wafter.

If there's not much in the way of nuisance fish then sweetcorn would be my first choice, if there is then maize.
You could always use a lighter in-line lead.

Most rigs on clay will be decent, nuisance fish and firmness of the clay is what I'd arrange the rig to combat or utilise etc.... As for the lead plugging in are you tethering the cast and feeling the lead down, 🤷🏻‍♂️...

Well, Clay is usually pretty firm so if it's a clear and clay bottom a bottom bait would suffice (to me) for starters.
Everything else depends on how paranoid you are re-rig camouflage.
What color is the Clay (there are several possible types)?
You WILL find a braided hook link to match the Grey and Reddy/Brown varieties amongst the Sufix range.
I know as I own them although the names escape me at the quick.
But then again you won't get better-camouflaged hook links than one made from mono or Fluorocarbon?
As for lead arrangements, each to their own but to me less is more and even more unobtrusive is a simple running lead on your mainline rather than a bloomin' great lead clip and semi-fixed lead.
Again it all depends on how clear the water is and how paranoid you are re-rig camouflage .....

You WILL locate a twisted snare connect to coordinate the Gray and Reddy/Brown assortments among the Sufix range.
I know as I own them in spite of the fact that the names get away from me at the speedy.
Be that as it may, on the other hand, you won't improve covered snare joins than one produced using mono or Fluorocarbon?
Concerning lead plans, each to their own yet to me toning it down would be best and significantly more inconspicuous is a straightforward running lead on your mainline as opposed to a bloomin' dubai fishing shop extraordinary lead clasp and semi-fixed lead.
Again everything relies upon how clear the water is and how neurotic you are re-rig cover .....
Are you sure?

This action cannot be undone.
