I've started spombing more than before and bought myself a proper set up - before I used my catfish rods with heavy mono as I don't fish massive distances. I have 30lb Nash braid on the reel which I was assured is good enough straight through - no leader. I was fishing 7 wraps out 3 or 4 spombs next thing I had a crack off and lost my first spomb - a midi spomb not even a normal spomb. So I've tied a shock leader on 50lb Nash braided shock leader (not a massive fan of Nash end tackle anyway) Used a double Uni knott - wet it - tightened 3.5 turns of the reel plus 2 rod lengths, it was quite bulky tried again got it tighter and I was happy with it. Casting out its impossible - could feel it catching even caught so much it nearly seperate my rod. At a loss of what to do as any knott I've tried seem so bulky.

Some guy on Facebook had the same problem But he lost 3 or 4 spombs I believe
He had a video up and was snapping it between his hands

It's a nightmare - and costly. Loose confidence in that part of it aswell!!

How many turns are you doing on each side of the knot? That knot with braid should pull down nice and small so that it you barely hear it through the guides, something is definitely not right with your knot tying if it separates the rod! What rod is it?

Try a Mahin Knot, where you just do an overhand knot in the leader then down and back up with the mainline and back through the loop of the overhand knot (see link), this way both tag ends point towards the reel, also I have found it better leaving longer tag ends of at least half an inch

4 turns on the leader side - 6 on the braid side. It's deffinetly my knott tying I think it's something I haven't done much of - if I'm using a leader I normally do a figure of 8 knot happy days never had any problems with knotts before which is even more frustrating!! It's a carp spirit rod decent enough I was spodding 14-15 wraps no bother with it until now!!
Thank you I'll try that knott but it does seem the leader is very thick

Clipped up with braid on a spod or Spomb?
I have said it before, if you give a hard cast with braid and it hits the clip it can crack off, at the clip, taking everything out into the water.
There is minimal or no stretch in braid, it just pings once it goes past its breaking strain. Speed and velocity can cause that!
One of the first things you need to do is understand how hard you need to cast to get the distance required. 7 wraps is around 25metres or 28yards, not far at all, so hardly any effort, probably more a gentle side cast or a lob than an overhead whack.
Personally, I went back to 15lb mono for Spombing or spodding, with an Amnesia or Greased Weasel shockleader. (30/40lb)

Hi. I use 30lb braid with 50 lb mono mainline
The knot I use is the Albright knot
I use the monoleader for two reasons
1 it will not split your finger in half if you get it wrong on the cast
2 there is some Stretch in the mono
Not had a problem with this in the past

I use cheap Chinese 30lb braid, and a 45lb quicksilver shockleader - tied to the mainline using the MAHIN knot. Used that set up for years and never have any issues.

That was all it was a short lob over my head no power just used the motion of a half full spomb and it cracked off.
Given the Mahin knott a try and I'll see how I go tomorrow
