Extra rig ring on a Multi Rig (15 posts / 1,786 views)

I've been using multi rigs for years and I've always included an item on the rig without questioning it and that's the extra small ring that goes on the hook itself. Is it really required?

I'm sure I was told it's an extra fail safe to stop the rig going back through the eye of the hook but I don't see how that can happen anyway.

No need for it. I use multi all the time and i use 2 pieces of hook silicone either side of the eye of the hook to help stop hook sliping on the cast and just a micro ring swivel for mounting the bait. Never had one fail me yet

It's not a rig I use a lot but I have never seen one tied with a rig ring actually on the hook. Don't see what purpose it would serve. Either a rig ring or micro swivel on the loop. Some use a bit of silicon on the hook eye to get the angle they like. Bit of putty or shot. That's it.

I thought the inclusion of the ring on the hook was to protect the line from the opening on the hook eye in the fight as on some hooks it can be a little sharp.

I've personally never heard of anyone having that problem. It seems to me to be an unneeded complication. I've always tried to keep rigs as simple as possible. It's up to you, if it gives you confidence then use it, can't see it will do any harm.

I don't use the rig myself so cant say whether I think it's necessary, but I'm sure I read it on here as to why some that do include the ring, I seem to remember it was an article Ken townley shared on a previous thread on the multi rig but I could be wrong.

Never bothered with it in all the years I've used the multi rig, never had anything go wrong in all that time and very very few hookpulls

Yes, I think that's the reason I was given for it.

Mike Kavanagh(sp?) that invented/championed the multi always used to recommend the extra ring on the shank. Must have been getting on for 10 years ago now though.

Well there you go, learn something new every day I guess.
I've never used a ring on the shank and do not believe it adds any benefit.
Are you sure?
